Elon Musk has reportedly poured $1 billion into the media empire behind CNN and Paramount, potentially giving the billionaire a powerful new foothold in Hollywood and sending shockwaves through an industry packed with his fiercest critics.
The world's richest man has acquired a stake in Skydance, the entertainment giant controlled by David Ellison, according to people familiar with the investment who spoke to Semafor.
The blockbuster deal could mark the beginning of a much larger alliance between Musk and the Ellison family, whose sprawling media interests include CNN, HBO, CBS and Paramount.
And for liberal commentators who have spent years attacking the Tesla and SpaceX boss, the prospect of Musk gaining influence over their corporate parent company could prove particularly uncomfortable.
Among those potentially affected are CNN anchor Jake Tapper and HBO comedian John Oliver, both of whom have publicly criticized Musk.
Musk's investment marks an extraordinary twist in his long-running feud with CNN, a network he has repeatedly ridiculed.
In 2020, he sneered, 'What I find most surprising is that CNN still exists,' while four years later he declared that 'CNN is dying' following a bitter falling-out with former anchor Don Lemon.
Now, the billionaire could find himself holding a financial stake in the very news organization he once openly mocked.
While there is no evidence Musk intends to interfere with their programming, his arrival as an investor raises questions about the future direction of some of America's most prominent news and entertainment brands.
The $1 billion investment comes as Skydance seeks fresh capital to strengthen its finances, reduce costs and revive its stock price following its ambitious expansion.
Musk's involvement was reportedly finalized around the same time as investments from other backers, including billionaire philanthropist and Skydance board member Laurene Powell Jobs.

Does anyone know what percentage of the stock this represents?
Isn’t the Daily Mail owned by a billionaire?
What I would give to share a doobie with this cat!
HOORAY Elon!
Its only a problem when someone not Communist does it.
Imagine CNN being resurrected from the dead and competing with Fox. Or even Newsmax.
Years ago someone complained that the liberals owned the media and said that the solution was for conservatives to invest in it. Now it’s happening. Good news.
Another, less vulnerable, but more valuable target would be Disney, which owns ABC.
It’s market cap in $195B.
Disney actually has valuable intellectual property (all the classic Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, the parks) and would be a natural to de-wokify and turned back into a profitable, family-oriented, company.
It'll be funny if Tucker Carlson works for CNN again.
Rockets dancing in skies - freed voices of conservatives skipping over air waves... Thank YOU Elon.
Eventually, I can see them spin off Star Wars and Marvel. Easy way for them to raise money plus it'll allow them to focus on the core brands.
Disney’s had their fangs pulled - families quit showing up and giving them money. Disney’s not a big problem anymore.
It is actually a pretty small percentage. Since Elon has FU money as much as anything l think he did this to send the loonies into orbit.
CNN is an insignificant portion of what Skydance now owns. Warner Bros is far more important.
I admit I was surprised at the lack of propaganda on the 227 US radio stations he bought controlling interest of in 2024.
So far.
About 2 to 3% it seems based on stock price.
Twitter/X apparently was just an appetizer.
