A fast-moving grass fire that killed at least four soldiers at a western Canadian military base on Saturday was sparked by an exercise using live grenades, a senior defense official said on Thursday.
High winds then propelled the blaze across the army base in Wainwright, overwhelming dozens of soldiers. The incident was one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military.
“The fire initiated on the automatic grenade launcher range … [it] initiated as a result of routine military training that was happening on that range at the time,” Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan told reporters.
Officials said 27 people remain hospitalized, several in critical condition.
The soldiers and reserve members were preparing to deploy to Latvia, where Canadian forces have their largest international military operation.

"The C-13 grenade is used by the Canadian army to clear trenches and bunkers."
Aren’t grenades rather VIOLENT for Canadians to be trusted with?
Rotate the troops by embedding them in the IDF. They’ll learn how to fight.
From what I could find on the web the C-19 is the Canadian version of the M-19 grenade launcher.

Was it a demonstration of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch gone awry?
They exceeded the count of three? After that Mr. Hand Grenade is no longer your friend.
Who’s in charge of that rabble , they didn’t check to see if there would be a fire hazard ?
And five is right out.
Call me unsurprised.
Every year in interior Alaska the US Army sets the place on fire. There is a time after the snow goes out and before greenup when the risk of a wildfire is quite high. Later when the vegetaion has greened up and we begin to get rain it is much safer.
For some reason the lower 48 military geniuses that plan exercises always start them at a time of high fire danger. One year this resulted in an 87,000 acre fire covering the area with smoke, and costing millions of dollars to fight.
Our headache is not if they should or should not train, they should, but that the folks in charge show the slightest glimmer of common sense and intelligence and schedule this stuff after greenup. But you cannot reason with them or even talk to them.
Spot on.
Our region is experiencing a protracted period of exceedingly pleasant weather, but VERY dry, after a very wet spring and summer, then a “hot as a firecracker” September.
You get the picture. I’m surprised we have not yet had a serious fire problem, but, burn bans are in place and most people have the sense to abide by them. Hopefully, Ft. Campbell* (some distance to the south, but also very dry) has someone sensible in command.)
*Every surrounding county has a burn ban.
