The FBI has arrested and charged a 17-year-old boy from McKinney for planning to assassinate U.S. Representative Keith Self at an event last Saturday.
Federal investigators said the juvenile was also planning to carry out a terrorist attack in North Texas on behalf of ISIS.
The suspect was arrested on October 5 after acquiring a firearm, according to federal law enforcement sources.
Sources tell WFAA that the 17-year-old had been radicalized recently and was being monitored by federal agents.
The suspect remains in federal custody, and his name has not been publicly released.
“Protecting our Constitutional Republic from radical Islam is getting messy," Rep. Self told WFAA in a statement. "I served in the military for 25 years with the mindset that defending freedom was worth the sacrifice. Our elected leaders should govern with that same mindset.”
Members of Congress are given a security stipend they can use for personal protection.
Self said he is confident in his security team.
Last month, the McKinney Republican introduced a non-binding resolution in Congress that denounces Sharia law and opposes its implementation within the United States. Prior to that, Self has also led legislation against Islamic extremism and Sharia law.
Last December, he co-founded the “Sharia-Free America Caucus” along with U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin.
Its stated mission is “to oppose the influence of Sharia law in the United States and assert its incompatibility with the U.S. Constitution and Western values.”
Self’s district is at the center of a high-profile debate over a new mosque that was just approved.
In August, over protests of some citizens, the McKinney City Council approved the McKinney Islamic Association’s plans for a new mosque saying it was fully compliant with local laws.

This is why we should raise the voting age back to 21. Twenty-five would be better but my expectations are realistic.
That’s a very good guess. I had forgotten about that event, but many members of that “community” consider it their kamikaze level mission to destroy any evidence of disagreement.
