(NewsNation) — A National Guard member and an armed man were shot in Washington, D.C., late Sunday after a street fight turned violent, police said.
Metropolitan Police Department interim Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters Monday that Guard members were sitting in a van in the 400 block of 8th Street Southeast when they saw a fight break out on the sidewalk. Seven or eight Guard members got out to step in.
Someone in the fight pulled out a gun and started shooting, Carroll said. Guard members “immediately gave commands to that individual to put down the gun,” he said, but the man pointed the weapon at them and they fired back.
The fight began on the sidewalk, and then the man ran into an alley and fired again at the Guard members, Carroll said.
One Guard member was hit in the leg. The man was hit in the abdomen and arrested. Both were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive.
Three Guard members fired their weapons, Carroll said, and investigators don’t know yet whose shot hit the man.

Thank you for posting the explanation of that ridiculous headline. Without it, I would have struggled to figure out what in the world happened.
“after a street fight turned violent.”
I always considered street fights as violent events with or without guns.
