September’s producer price index came in much hotter than economists forecast on Thursday, underscoring the continued inflationary pressure from energy amid the U.S. war with Iran.
The measure of underlying inflation pressures climbed 1.3% in September and 6.3% on an annual basis, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That marked the largest monthly and annual gains since March 2022 and December 2022, respectively.
Both readings topped expectations of economists polled by Dow Jones, who forecast an advance of 0.6% on the month and 5.5% annually.

But the SS cola says inflation is only 3.6%.
Well, it took TWO rolls of the dice to get those numbers!
Odds of a rate hike were already at 40% yesterday and more bad news only supports the argument for an increase further. We might not want one before the midterms, but to say it should not occur... that’s a different argument.
They don’t want to wait too long and let inflation spike further. It’s a coin flip at this point if they do it.
The concern is that President Trump would say it’s an effort to influence the election. And other would say as well.
He wants rates lowered - now.
Yeah, the Fed has let this go on too long as it is. They’ll do something, and sooner rather than later.
So, he wants even more inflation.
What any president wants is irrelevant to the independence of the FED and what they should do. He went after Powell and everyone else and here we still are.

Trump 47 has shown repeatedly this year that his ability to think of medium to long term consequences of decisions has been compromised or severely degraded.
Midterms wouldn’t be in the shitter if he listened to what POTUS 45 said in 2019 on Twitter about US involvement in the shitbox always being an epic disaster. Waiting 8 months would not have changed anything in regards to Iran’s nuclear programs.
Just writing how I believe it will go...
That Warsh is part of the Deep State, that he’s in the tank for Dems and the globalists, etc.
Why aren’t the billions of dollars Congress repeatedly authorizes for the Ukrainian government not also considered “inflationary”? Why does the media only scream about the billions spent toppling the Iranian thugocracy yet are silent about Ukraine?
The price for diesel fuel will increase the price of everything. We have to pay for the 50 year Iranian problem once again. This time, make my money count and get rid of the Iranians.
This is my view. *IF* we were going to get involved in Iran, it would have been much better to wait until after the midterms. That would have given him 2 years to break their backs.
Very much.
Besides, the practical effect of a fed rate hike 5 days before voting ends is limited.
Yes, rates on CCs and other rate variable instruments will follow suit and hike... but I highly doubt any persuadable voters are going to see the results/connect the dots and suddenly change votes. Sure, I imagine the market indices will shed a point or so. But - again, I doubt a single voter has a S&P500 number line in mind where above X is an R vote, below X is a D vote.
Both CPI and PPI are moving in the wrong direction. With low unemployment? The Fed’s job is pretty crystal clear.
Here is the big problem and its NOT energy or home prices.
The Gen-Whatever spending and all on credit cards.
Funds to do REAL business issues are drying up.
When was the last time Congress authorized “billions of dollars” for Ukraine?

April, 2024.
Well they’ve been right on the money every year, right?
That is a very good point.
A lot of state and local gov’t pension plans are in horrific shape, also. I know Illinois is particularly bad about that, and KY may be worse! Former KY Gov. Bevin tried to address it, a bit clumsily, I’ll admit, and got crucified for it.
