Sagal Abdi-Wali, the newly-elected MP for Holborn and St Pancras, was welcomed by Andy Burnham as she took her seat in Parliament after beating Zack Polanski in the crunch north London by-election.
MPs returned to the Commons on Monday after the break for the party political conferences.
Parliamentary business started in the Chamber shortly after 2.30pm.
Ms Abdi-Wali was hailed by dozens of Labour MPs in Parliament’s vast Westminster Hall where she took a selfie with the Prime Minister and her new colleagues.
Taking her seat in the Commons Chamber, she said: “I swear by almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, according to the law, so help me God.”
She was accompanied to the despatch box by Labour MPs Natasha Irons (Croydon East) and Liam Conlon (Beckenham and Penge) who was the party’s political campaign chief for the by-election.
Ms Abdi-Wali, who as Camden Council leader, defeated Mr Polanski in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election last Thursday, took her seat in the afternoon.
She got 12,292 votes, ahead of Mr Polanski on 8,928, a majority of 3,364 but with a 13% swing to the Greens, whose vote share was up by 22.4%.
In third was Conservative Party candidate Ewan Cameron on 1,922, followed by Reform UK’s Peter Newman with 1,612.

Headline kinda buries the lede. A leftist Green candidate was ousted by a leftist electorate for not hating the Jews sufficiently. Labor likely now sees Jew hate as a successful path to wrestle some voters back from the Greens.
I am unfamiliar with the name Sagal Abdi-Wali. Is that one of the clans from the Highlands?
