Montana Democrat who refuses to drop out may spoil party’s Senate hopes

Candidate Alani Bankhead vigorously denies claims she is a Republican plant running to take votes away from a more popular independent.

KALISPELL, Mont. — Her candidacy was boosted with mysterious dark money. Some of her own party have suggested she is a “Republican plant” running a fake campaign. Still, Democrat Alani Bankhead continues to crisscross Montana in a gray Subaru in her long-shot bid to be the state’s next U.S. senator.

In the weeks since she refused to step aside to make way for an independent opponent who is more popular with many Democrats, Bankhead said she has been personally threatened and vilified for standing in the way of potential historic change in the Senate. She even woke up one morning to find the streets of her neighborhood papered with signs that said “Bow Out Bankhead.”

Bankhead’s detractors have accused her of being a Democrat in name only, noting she attended a right-leaning church, voted for John McCain and self-published a career book for a conservative publisher. Even her own husband couldn’t say for sure in an interview if she’s always been a Democrat. “She’s always had more liberal-leaning perspectives on things … so I guess!” Lyle Bankhead said.

Bankhead, 44, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, is a relative newcomer to the state, having only moved here in 2022, an anathema to many Montanans, who fear their rugged paradise is being overrun by outsiders.

“I wish the Democrat who is really a Republican would get out,” said former senator Jon Tester (D-Montana), who held the office for 18 years and supports independent candidate Seth Bodnar. “She doesn’t understand the magnitude of this race.”

In their battle to wrest back control of the Senate in November’s midterms, Democrats have turned to supporting independents in deep-red states, and candidates in Senate...

If she withdrew her name would still be on the ballot but the independent candidate might get her votes is how I read it.

Whoa. I hope you are not reading it correctly, E. Pluribus. That sounds like it could be an Alaska-type win for the libs.

They don't want her replaced. They want her to drop out as the Democrats are trying a new strategy in Republican states of running their leftist candidates "independents" so that they sound apolitical - they are doing this in Montana and Nebraska - they tried it several years ago in Kansas a well.

Funny how the “Independents” always end up caucusing with the Democrats, i.e. Bernie Sanders.

First sentence is probably libel. From start to finish a hit piece.

This is the Dem way, though. All fake people until elected; once in office a communist lockstep vote whether you pretended to be a SF rainbow person, a NY islamist, a midwest ‘independent’ or a southern race-baiter before. The only defecting votes are arranged for re-election purposes and only when it won’t change the result.

They're trying that here in Idaho during this election cycle. Todd Achilles (yes, that's his real name) is running as an independent, but it's pretty obvious what he's all about. I see his signs next to the "Yes on Prop 1" signs (which is a pro-abortion position). He's running for US Senate against Jim Risch.

Sounds good to me. We Repubs have always been infiltrated by the RINOs. Turnabout is fair play.

While I agree that she’s likely a Republican, given her decent looks, one should also remember that the DEMOCRATS have a built-in advantage in nearly all elections, that being the Libertarian Party, which sucks at least 2/3’s of their votes from Republicans.
