President Donald Trump’s Friday announcement that Russia will supply diesel fuel to the global market marked an apparent pivot from recent efforts to pressure Moscow to end the Ukraine war by targeting Russian energy exports. Trump claimed the move, unveiled with less than a month left in an affordability-focused midterm election, would swiftly bring down record-high diesel prices. But commentators and critics were quick to highlight contradictions between the new policy and prior efforts by the U.S. to clamp down on Russian oil sales. Those efforts most recently included the enactment of the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, empowering Trump to impose tariffs up to 100% on the top purchasers of Russian crude oil or gas, among other restrictions. Trump signed the bill into law just three weeks ago.
“Congress just passed a law giving Trump the power to impose new tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil & gas,” Scott Lincicome, vice president of the libertarian Cato Institute, said on X after Trump’s Friday announcement.
“Can America tariff America?” he quipped.

TRUMP’S RUSSIAN OIL DEAL: A STUNNING REVERSAL OF HIS OWN POLICY AND A DIRECT TEST OF THE LAW HE SIGNED.
On October 9, Donald Trump announced a deal with Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply the United States with millions of tonnes of diesel fuel—just weeks after Trump himself signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law on September 18. That legislation expands sanctions against Russia and authorizes tariffs of up to 100% on certain countries buying Russian energy.
Think about that contradiction…
For years, Washington pressured countries buying Russian oil, arguing that Moscow’s energy revenues help finance its war against Ukraine.
Trump himself imposed additional tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian crude in 2025. Yet now, with Russia still waging its war against Ukraine, Trump has announced a deal to bring Russian diesel directly into the United States.
The question is unavoidable: Why should other countries face economic penalties for buying Russian energy while the United States prepares to buy Russian fuel itself?
And what does this mean for the sanctions law Trump signed with his own name? The Graham Act gives the president the authority to act against Russia according to US Law.
But it raises an urgent question: Will his administration faithfully implement the law Congress passed, or will it use exceptions and executive discretion to undermine the very pressure the legislation was designed to apply?
This is bigger than political hypocrisy. It concerns the credibility of American foreign policy, the consistency of sanctions enforcement, and whether America’s allies can trust Washington to stand by its commitments.
If economic pressure on Russia is justified when other countries buy its energy, the American public deserves a clear explanation of why a direct U.S. deal with Moscow should be treated differently.
If the president believes this deal is lawful and necessary, he should explain the legal basis, disclose the terms, and clarify how it fits with the sanctions regime he personally signed into law.
You cannot demand sacrifices from allies, punish other nations for buying Russian energy, and then expect the public to ignore a reversal when the United States wants the fuel itself.
The law must mean something. Accountability must apply to the president, too.
No double standards. No evasions. Show the public how this deal complies with the law.
LAW AND ORDER
That is an AI write up, guy.
CNBC is looking. They’re hoping
TDS people will gladly pay double now at the pump in order to turn Congress against Trump
Show the public how this deal complies with the law.
Are you freaking serious?? That law gave the President the authority to impose tariffs. It does not require him to impose those tariffs, and it certainly doesn't forbid him from entering into this deal.
Congress gave him the power. That doesn’t mean he has to do it.
America should NOT enable wars by partly financing Russia’s illegal war.
As you know, Russia is arming and helping Iran’s nuclear research program. They recently and very OFFICIALLY signed a 25 billion dollar NUCLEAR deal for God’s sake. Russia is building up Iran as the new nuclear monster in the region!
Trump said “no more nuclear of any kind for Iran”, then suddenly he helps them via Russia... Madness.
Trump puts the entire Republican Party in jeopardy. Let’s not forget that the Republicans in congress recently voted for a massive new sanctions bill against Russia and YES it was signed into LAW by Trump!
Thus, if Trump really goes forward with his plan to buy Russian oil, he would be in violation AGAINST American Law and against his very own signature!
This is unprofessional, illegal and clownish.
And it puts Americans security LAST.

Mother says be careful
And don't stay out too long
Don't do things you shouldn't
Miss me when I'm gone
Daddy says not now, son
Well, just do the best you can
And you'll make out somehow, son
Be just like I am, just like I am
You won't need a reason
She don't let you choose
And so to make the game easy
Mother makes the rules
We all know how the rules are
Changin’ from day to day
That's the breaks, and I'm sorry
Some of us must be going
Some of us have to stay
Some of us may be showing
Some just fade away
It's sad to say it's the ending
All the feelin’s gone
If you don't mind pretending
You can come along
And mother says she's ready
And if you have the time
She'll help us all to get steady
Make us all feel better, make us all feel fine
Make us all feel better, make us all feel fine
Who knew Joe Walsh had such a good grasp of geopolitics way back when.
Some of us must be going and some just fade away. - Zelensky should take the hint and do right before Trump changes the rules again Law and order is great but Trump is dealing with unserious. entitled and petulant children running the EU and Ukraine so what can you expect.
You are more stupid than you have previously looked to us.
What’s funny is that you’ve now made your choice of AI look even more stupid.
“Stupid-Squared”
What a joke! You corrupt what you touch, then broadcast it to the world.
Is the US one of those "certain countries"? If that's the only "punishment" for buying Russian energy and the US happens to be one of those countries, which is doubtful, then to be legally compliant the US should 100% tariff itself. No contradiction.
You need to concentrate on the revolt going on in your country, frog. Sooner or later your Islamic conquerors will cut you off from the internet. Surrender now and pay their tax and you can be their slave.
You’ve got your underwear all twisted up, don’t you?
You don’t even live in the US, and you claim he is putting “the entire Republican Party in jeopardy.” You also claim “he would be in violation AGAINST American Law and against his very own signature!”
Okay, put up or shut up. What American law is he in violation by breaking it? We are listening.
“That law gave the President the authority to impose tariffs. It does not require him to impose those tariffs, and it certainly doesn’t forbid him from entering into this deal.”
>>>>>>>>>><<
We all know that.
The point I’m trying to make is that the situation is worse.
The problem is the terrible outlook of this…
Not implementing a law that passed Congress past and that the president Of the USA himself signed just a few weeks ago… looks morally dark.
What are the reason for not implementing a law signed by the huge majority of Republican US Law makers and Including the White House ?
Lindsay Graham and McCain are looking up and puking.
Maybe so...
But it is a first step toward sanity.
People against this must hate Trump more than they like affordable goods and a decent economy.
Omygosh! How does he do it? Trump has gotten demonicRATS, the Fake News Media, and TDS Positive FReeptards to support higher diesel prices. 👏 👏 👏 👍 🏆 🏅
The law turned out to be bad news for America, so Trump reevaluated our position. Why do you want high gas prices so badly?
The executive branch has waiver authority written into the sanctions legislation and Trump is apparently exercising that authority.
Again (and try not to deflect this time sounding like an automated bot):
For two years, Trump has put economic pressure on Russia, forbidding nations to buy Russian oil. Right? RIGHT ??
But now when America apparently needs Russian oil… it’s all fine to buy Russian oil again ??
Will Trump now end his tariffs against India because it is buying Russian oil?
If not… will Trump put tariffs on America for buying Russian oil? (sarcasm)
Trump is right now violating TWO years of Trump foreign policy.
Incomprehensible.
I support Trump’s years-long V1.0 foreign policy.
I disapprove Trump V2.0 new-one-day old pro Iran-Russia policy.
Oh, Frenchie, I see you’re still on your TDS hyperactive jihad against Trump, MAGA and now diesel. When will we see the end of your feverish TDS’ing?
None of that matters. Trump is putting forward this deal and anything he implements must be for the benefit of the American people. Maybe not immediately but in the future. Objective comments on possible contradictions will show you hate the U.S.
In all seriousness I am confident Trump is acting within his rightful authority in the full belief it will benefit Americans. Whether it is the wisest move is yet to be seen.
