The AfD on Tuesday became Germany's first far-right party to win the post of speaker in a state parliament since World War II, when its candidate was elected in an eastern region.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) took nearly 44 percent of the vote last month in Saxony Anhalt state in the former communist East Germany, easily beating the centre-right CDU of unpopular Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Newly elected state lawmakers gathered for the first time Tuesday in parliament in the state capital Magdeburg to elect a speaker, with the AfD's candidate Tobias Rausch winning 48 votes, with only 29 against and five abstentions.
Several hundred anti-AfD protesters gathered outside holding signs with slogans such as "Never again is now" in reference to Germany's Nazi past and reading out parts of the constitution which set out citizens' basic rights.
Sandy Gaertner, one of the organisers said that "critical voices of civil society... need to be loud", accusing the AfD of "hollowing out, stretching and even trampling on" the constitution.
The anti-immigration and Moscow-friendly AfD narrowly missed out on an absolute majority in the state vote, winning 39 out of 83 seats.

Far right there=slightly left of center here.
“far right” is what communists call non-communists.
Q.”When does the majority cease to be “Far Right” ?
MSM Answer: “NEVER”
Chancellor Fred Mertz has had it!
Chancellor Fred Mertz has had it!
Fred has some ‘splainin’ to do.
No
In Britain, France, Italy you’d be right. The German far right is genuinely extreme.
In this context “far right” is defined by a single issue — opposition to unrestricted immigration.
Give an example of one extreme position.
The AFD is not far right.
In Germany the ‘far right’ party is run by a female homosexual in a long term relationship with a Sri Lankan. Genuinely extreme.
Germany was not far right in WWII. That is a leftist lie. The NAZIs were the German National Socialist Worker’s Party. Socialism is left wing.
The Nazis were fascists and the communists hated them. Even today leftists with communist beliefs call their political enemies NAZIs or fascists. Communists and fascists had a lot in common. They both believed in one party rule by one dictator. They both hated capitalism. Communists believed that the State controlled everything. There was no personal ownership. Fascists let you own property, but if you didn’t use the property for what they wanted you to, they could take it away. Fascists and commies preached individual rights, but in truth, the only rights you had, were the ones the totalitarian state allowed you to have. Fascists and communists used violence to bring about change. Leftists today are commies and fascists combined, and hatred of Jewish people rounds out their projection.
This is a real tragedy for Germany, but at least they were able to keep the Nazis under at bay for the last 80 years.

Sounds like you’ve lost a piton or two in your climb toward 20th Century history.
The Nazi party was, in fact, the National Socialist Party. The primary leader of the socialist faction was Ernst Rohm, leader of the Brownshirt Brigades. Hitler’s faction was afraid of the Communists in the USSR, which was a large part of why Barbarossa was launched against Russia.
The “socialist” component of the Nazis left during the “Night of the Long Knives,” when Hitler had Rohm, the leadership of the Brownshirts, and all of his perceived competitors or enemies systematically murdered to consolidate his rule. That, along with the invasion of the USSR, solidified the Soviet resistance to Hitler, since he no longer led what they considered a “socialist workers movement.”
You’re welcome.
They refer to the rioters in Paris as "students" and illegal aliens as "undocumented" and more recently "migrants"--more newspeak.
It's all part of their propaganda to brainwash the masses.
