MILWAUKEE - Abortion hasn't been a major focus in the race for Wisconsin governor, but with just four weeks to go, Democrat David Crowley is making a new push. Constitutional amendment?
What they're saying:
Crowley announced he backs a push to amend the Wisconsin Constitution to make abortion a constitutional right.
"I'm also a girl dad times three, and so this isn't just a policy debate for me. It's personal. You know, when I look at my three daughters, I think about the Wisconsin I want them to grow up in, a Wisconsin where they have the same rights to make their own decisions, the same rights their mother and grandmother had," Crowley said at a campaign event inside Milwaukee’s Turner Hall. He was joined by his running mate, Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, and U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
"David Crowley voted against requiring medical care for a baby born alive, and now he is trying to distract from his own extreme record because he supports abortion up until birth. I will uphold Wisconsin’s current law. David Crowley will take Wisconsin from where we are today to one of the most extreme abortion policies in the country," said U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, Crowley's Republican opponent.
What's next:
To change the Wisconsin Constitution is not up to the governor, but the Legislature and voters. First, for two consecutive two-year sessions, the Legislature passes a resolution and then it goes to voters for the final say in a binding referendum.
Last month, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin sued in state court, urging the court to find that the Wisconsin Constitution already offers a right to abortion.

A “girl dad”? Is that like being a pet parent? Does he use this goofy circumlocution because he can’t bring himself to call his offspring “daughters?” Does he call them “uterus-having persons?”
I gave that comment of his some thought.
I think what he meant to say is:
“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”
I think it conflates with the trend of substituting the word KIDDO for the word CHILD. Trendy talk to show one is soooo cool.
Mollach will be happy with this...
He doesn’t need a constitutional amendment, he needs the constitution to truly teach his girls the catechism of the catholic church. Pansy.
I love my daughters so much, I’d kill my grandkids to make them happy!
How about gays, jews, and blacks: would you kill them too to make your daughters happy?
But Our Heavenly Father won’t be.
Somehow, a man who wants his daughters to have an unrestricted right to kill his grandchildren does not seem like a good choice to be making decisions for the future of other people’s children and grandchildren.
But he obviously got the punished with a baby expression from President Obama. Unless somebody used that before, but he was the first person I heard to say that.
