Even as President Donald Trump was on his way to the Port City for a political rally Friday, three University of South Alabama students were making appearances in federal court to answer to charges of making threats against him.
Amare Jemal Woods, Cameron Lamark Lewis and Kayla Leaann Smith are charged with threats against the president. A federal magistrate judge ordered all three to be detained following on a detention hearing Monday.
Affidavits filed by federal law enforcement officers allege that the defendants made violent threats over social media in the run-up to Trump’s rally.
The University of South Alabama condemned the threats.
“The University of South Alabama unequivocally condemns any form of threats directed at elected officials or any individual with whom we disagree,” the school said in a statement. “We encourage open dialogue and active civic participation, and having a difference of opinion is a natural part of any vibrant community. However, there is a clear line between exercising free expression and engaging in intimidation or unlawful conduct.”
Jason Darley, an attorney who represents Woods, told FOX10 News that the Secret Service takes threats extremely seriously.
“The problem is that the president is on campus and Woods is a student,” he said.
At the same time, Darley said, he does not believe that his client actually intended to harm Trump.
“If this kid is a threat, then everybody pecking on a keyboard is a threat,” he said.
The affidavit alleges that Woods, using the handle jemaltherealone, made threatening messages on TikTok, including a Sept. 27 message in which he wrote, “he gotta die bro” in response to a post about the president’s rally.
A separate affidavit stated that Lewis, a philosophy major, made a veiled reference on X to last year’s assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
The charges against Smith revolve around a reply to a TikTok post on Sept. 29 in which she wrote, “We only got one chance let’s take it.” Then she posted an image of someone mimicking holding a gun. According to the affidavit, she is pursuing a degree in elementary education.
Darley said his client is an aerospace engineering student who recently graduated from a Mobile-area high school and comes from a good family.
Darley said the First Amendment can offer a possible offense but acknowledged that the law takes a hard line on threat.
“The statute as it’s written is so broad. It doesn’t require that the person have any capability of carrying it out,” he said.
Darley said he understands why the judge ordered the defendants to be held while Trump was in town but added that he will argue his client poses no danger.
“I don’t honestly think any of these three are threats,” he said.
The maximum penalty for the offense is five years in prison.

I don’t care what race or citizenship status the perps have. I am beyond angry at monsters trying to kill my President.
May God continue to protect Donald Trump.
It’s them again, Yogi.
Amen.
South Alabama has had this problem on campus for a while now. Earlier this year, Young Americans for Freedom members were threatened and their property damaged by left wing halfwits (redundant)
The do-nothing president, former congressman Jo Bonner has yet to do crap about it.
Kayla Smith...”she is pursuing a degree in elementary education.”
Why.am.I.not.surprised? Brainwashed already.
LOL
Odd since he’s done more for black folks than obamski ever did. Or clintoon. Or biDUHn. Guess some folks remain ignorant.
Just noticed that usa said they disagree as an entity in their statement. Pretty sure I read that correctly. Yes? No? Bueller?
I got another lesson in how liberals are psychotic. My sister went to the Trump rally yesterday. She was posting about it on Facebook. A friend of my psychotically liberal brother posted on my sister’s Facebook page, “Support a convicted rapist. To each his own I guess”. Here’s the thing, my sister kind of knows this guy through our brother. They are not friends. Why this guy would take the time and effort to post this on her page is incomprehensible to me.
...I just could not control my emotions; just could not help myself, so I had to look....yup....members of the African Persuasion, as I had suspected...(those Irish first names kinda threw me off for a bit....)......
Jemal Woods and Lamark Lewis look like identical twins!
Seriously ... where are THEIR d@m mug shots?
Yeah, they’ll never forgive him for creating jobs for them.
Amen
