Sen. Eric Schmitt’s effort to trip up former Trump prosecutor Jack Smith on Tuesday, the Missouri Republican seemed to mistake basketball teams playing about 650 miles apart.
Schmitt accused Smith of perjuring himself during a Senate hearing after repeatedly prodding him about whether he’d attended an NBA game in Atlanta on the evening of Feb. 3, 2024. The hometown Hawks were playing the Golden State Warriors.
Schmitt appeared to be trying to set Smith in Atlanta at the time Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was facing scrutiny for her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the special state prosecutor she hired for the county’s election-interference case against Trump.
He did, however, recall attending a University of Iowa women’s game at the University of Maryland on Feb. 3, 2024, recalling the game as one where then-Iowa star Caitlin Clark was playing.
“Could it then be that the University of Iowa was the Hawkeyes?” Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota interjected. “Perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully.”

I get that was going for the only thing the power to pursue which is perjury and he seemed quite satisfied that had caught Smith but, his tone revealed only that was a mere wish.
All stage craft on the one hand but, his behavior was outrageous, because we are supposed to be the good guys and everything, including his embarrassing name calling and break with decorum.
I have plenty of choice words to describe Jack Smith, the most overturned prosecutor whose only job in life is to be hatchet man in a "B" rated movie.
But, the senator displayed crayon level IQ to demonstrate his conscious incompetence

But, the senator displayed crayon level IQ to demonstrate his conscious incompetence
Almost as if it was intentional.
He got team names mixed up. Big Fing deal. Cry me a river Karen.
Why is the Senate even pursuing Smith, he is a no brainer, just disbar him get on with Governmental Issues.
No, he made a serious accusation using poorly researched and unverifiable facts.
Facts that were blatantly not facts. I expect much better from elected officials. This was a major failure.
Dems do it all the time. No one writes an article.
Sen. Schmitt is a former prosecutor and attorney general, he would not ask a witness an unverified question.
We have an evil party and as stupid party. It’s clear which one Schmitt is a member of.
The big Fing deal is that this wasn’t a silly gotcha - it blew up the whole, big gotcha from the Jack Smith hearing.
Based on - now obviously pre-canned because my twitter alerts lit up like a Christmas tree in the morning - strategy, the big gotcha was supposed to be catching Smith in a lie, under oath, about attending an NBA game in Atlanta and colluding with Fanni Fatty when her crap blew up.
It wasn’t a matter of getting the Atlanta NBA team name wrong - there’s actual televised footage (ESPN aired the Iowa/Maryland game) of Smith at the Iowa Hawk*eyes* college women’s game in Maryland.
It was supposed to be the big gotcha.
It blew up in spectacular, mock-worthy fashion.
The theory was a bit iffy to begin with - you don’t collude at a professional sports event - but the underlying intention was to catch Jack Smith lying about being in Atlanta when Fanni’s boy toy problem was discovered.
It wasn’t a silly misnaming a sportsball team - it blew up the whole point.
And yet.
He did.
Yeah, except that’s exactly what he did. He tried to corner Smith, and his “gotcha” moment was based upon incorrect info.
Once he realized it, he backtracked quickly, raising concern from the very low intelligence Senator Klobuchar, from MN.
He gave her an opening, and she’s running with it, all over the internet.
Iowa Hawkeyes in Maryland, is not nearly the same as Atlanta Hawks in Atlanta. Sorry.
One has to wonder: if Klobuchar knew Smith was at the Iowa v. Maryland game, why not let Sen. Schmitt know before his questioning? She could have passed him a note, folded up like a football, the way kids do in school.
Maybe someone spent good money on that oversized poster board and they were determined to get their money’s worth.
Smith may have been in Maryland watching women’s college basketball rather than professional basketball in Georgia, but apparently the distinction is tricky: both games involve baskets 10 feet high and use orange balls.
” if Klobuchar knew Smith was at the Iowa v. Maryland game, why not let Sen. Schmitt know before his questioning?”
Seriously?
Klobuchar is a Marxist whacko, the same ones who hired Jack Smith. Schmitt is trying to hang their boy out to dry.
