Tensions between the two countries have risen over Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Helmand provinces. Afghanistan’s Taliban government has claimed that nine civilians, including women and children, were killed in the strikes and 11 others were injured.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has said that its airstrikes targeted terrorist hideouts and that, according to initial reports, 22 terrorists were killed. The claims of both sides have not been independently verified.
According to the Balochistan online news network The Balochistan Post, Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that the strikes carried out on Wednesday night targeted three houses in Chogam in Kunar’s Shultan district and in Safar in Helmand’s Garmsir district. He alleged that women and children were killed in the attacks. Mujahid condemned the Pakistani action, calling it aggression.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information said the airstrikes were carried out on the basis of credible intelligence and that terrorist camps and hideouts were targeted at two locations. According to the ministry, the targets were destroyed with precision, and initial reports indicate that 22 terrorists were killed. Pakistan also said that weapons and ammunition at these hideouts were destroyed and that care was taken to avoid harm to civilians.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has also reported civilian casualties in the airstrikes. According to it, at least 10 civilians were killed, most of them children, while nine people were injured. The United Nations has appealed to both sides to reduce tensions over cross-border violence and to pursue the path of dialogue.
Pakistan has long accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government of sheltering armed groups that carry out attacks in Pakistan. Kabul rejects these allegations and describes terrorist activities inside Pakistan as its internal matter. Tensions between the two countries over cross-border attacks and military operations have increased in recent months.
In recent developments, the Afghan Ministry of Defense had also made claims regarding a clash in Nuristan with an armed group that came from Pakistan. Pakistan has rejected these allegations and has also denied charges related to the recruitment or training of former Afghan security personnel.
Following the latest airstrikes in Kunar and Helmand, accusations and counter-accusations between the two countries have intensified again. For now, there is a clear difference between the claims of the two sides regarding the number of people killed in the strikes and the nature of the targets.

Muslims killing other Muslims. How unique is this in world history?
Muslims have ALWAYS been in greater danger from other Muslims than from any other ethnic or religious demographic in the entire world.
