Newsom signs newsroom subsidy bill despite concerns

Despite lingering concerns about the bill, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday signed a major new subsidy that aims to support California’s local newsrooms.

Assembly Bill 2222 creates a refundable tax credit that would provide millions of dollars to news organizations across the state. Newsom said the benefits of the bill far outweigh his concerns, particularly in light of recent actions by President Donald Trump.

“I could have vetoed it, but at this moment of anxiety and stress — everything that Donald Trump is trying to do — I couldn’t do that,” the governor said at a news conference in Sacramento, calling the president’s recent actions an “assault on the First Amendment.”

Under the new program, eligible news organizations including print, television and digital outlets will receive a $20,000 credit for each the first five journalists they employ. Outlets will receive $15,000 credits for each additional journalist along with any new hires.

Employing eligible part-time journalists will also net their employers a $7,500 tax credit.

Journalism organizations applauded the bill signing. The California News Publishers Association in a social media post said AB 2222 “will help news organizations hire and retain journalists who keep our communities informed,” and SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin called the signing a “huge win for the quality journalism needed to build a healthy, informed society.”

Research shows more than 12,000 California journalists have lost their jobs since 2002. Newsom said he’s seen the hollowing-out and consolidation of newsrooms first and during his time in politics.

“That’s not healthy for any of us,” he said. “And we’ve seen what happens in the void. When we lose local journalism, partisan organizations step in.”

Newsom said the new law will even benefit organizations he views as “propaganda outlets” because “that’s what the First Amendment demands.”

I personally think Newsom may be some kind of foreign operator, or he’s crazier than a sh*thouse rat...

“because “that’s what the First Amendment demands.”

Nowhere in the First Amendment are the words subsidy, tax break, or public funding mentioned.
These Marxist DSA radicals just throw words against the wall, to see what they can get away with.
Newsome is a total failure at his job, and should never be promoted.

The half wit who signed a bill criminalizing investigative reporting has the gall to babble about protecting journalists?

Would love for Nick Shirley to find a way to take Ada vantage of this so they put an end to the whole program quickly.
