NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — More than 90 new state laws go into effect Thursday. Some affect how you can drive, and others deal with who can monitor where you drive.

One of the newly implemented laws changes the rules for the left lane. Beginning Thursday, drivers can get a ticket for staying in the left lane when they are not passing.

I don’t know how you enforce this. Lots of times someone is in the left lane, passing traffic, but then someone comes up behind them going 20 mph over the limit and expects them to get out of the way - while the first car is still passing other cars.

Obviously, if someone is just camping in the left lane they should get over - but what if they are passing other cars - but just not fast enough for the person in back of them?

I could see this causing accidents.

As long as you’re actively passing, you’re fine. Once you complete your passing maneuver, get over to the right. It’s when you ride alongside a vehicle in the right lane impeding the flow of traffic that you get ticketed. But, what you can’t do is say, “well, I’m driving the speed limit so I can stay right here.” It is, in fact, ok to speed up a bit to pass and then move over.

In every state I’ve lived in, this has been the law for over 20 years.

The right lane on many highways is so beat up it’s like riding a horse. I use right lane when it’s smooth.

Good way to cut the capacity of four or more lane roads. Happy rush hour Connecticut.

It’s called the “passing lane” for a reason.

“Ridiculous”

They did this in Virginia a few years ago. Hasn’t made a difference as far as I can tell. The hammer lane seems to always have some jackhole putzing along. This country makes it way to easy to get a driver’s license. If you can fog a mirror, you’re cleared for the road.

In every state I’ve lived in, this has been the law for over 20 years.

This was driver's ed 101 back when I started driving. The fact that this has to be a law tells me that our education system is failing our students across every possible metric including driving.

We should have European-style driving tests that are deliberately difficult. It's too easy to get and keep your license in most states in the US.

“drivers can get a ticket for staying in the left lane when they are not passing.”

IIRC, this has been in effect in NYS for decades. And the State Police were real hard-ass about it.

Impractical. It will cause slower traffic and accidents. But, well, shee-it fire, it’s all about revenue and the thrill of control.

In some places in Washington state years ago if there were 5 or more cars behind you, you could get a ticket for impeding traffic... That would be nice in many states where idiots can’t do the speed limit.

I got pulled over in Oklahoma in 2021 for pulling over to pass too early. Didn’t get a ticket and the State Trooper was cool about it. Then this past weekend I did a round trip to Atlanta which convinced me that more states really need this law or I need a rocket launcher more than headlights.

Finally ... Now enforce it ... Left lane drivers are some of the most dangerous drivers on the road ...

What I do is look in the rear view mirror and side mirror before passing. If someone is closing at a high rate of speed I let them go. They will eventually get dinged.
