An American tech CEO allegedly helped Russian nationals hide their ownership of a digital forensics company so it could land lucrative US government contracts — including a deal with the Secret Service.
Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that Oxygen Forensics CEO Lee Reiber, 52, allegedly joined forces with Moscow-based Russian national Oleg Sergeyevich Davydov, 52, in a Cold War-style scheme to conceal the company’s Russian ties while pitching its software to US agencies.
And now Reiber is headed for a Los Angeles federal courtroom.
The alleged deception could have given Russian agents a foothold inside a company providing technology used to “recover, preserve, and analyze electronic data from digital devices” belonging to government customers.
Reiber and Davydov have been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Reiber, an American, allegedly told the US government that the Alexandria, Virginia-based company wasn’t owned by Russians and that Russian nationals had no role in developing its software.
Prosecutors say that was far from the truth.

Russia has a long history of inserting “special Services” into the US and other countries. These people encourage others to favor policies that help Russia. In the 1930s there was a big effort to promote opposition to the US entering war in Europe, first the Spanish Civil War, and then WW2 which started in 1939. Then Hitler betrayed his 10 year peace agreement with Stalin and attacked Poland which was supposed to be shared by both countries. My parents told me how surprised they were to see how many people they knew were suddenly very supportive of our getting into the war in Europe.
After WW2 my father spent years of his spare time fighting efforts of Putin’s agents trying to take over unions in our major port cities. Eventually they destroyed his white collar union’s strength by splitting the membership. That group obtained contributions from management to destroy the union.
