New York City has finalised a more than $131m settlement with DoorDash amid allegations that the delivery company underpaid its workers.
The administration of Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the settlement on Tuesday. It marked the largest settlement for delivery workers in any city in the United States, set to affect 260,000 workers. Of the total, $115m will go directly to the workers, while $16m will go towards civil penalties and other costs.
A nearly 70-page consent order, provided to Al Jazeera by the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), found the San Francisco, California-based delivery giant failed to pay some of its workers the minimum amount required by law between December 2023 and June 2026.

Samuel Levine of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) said that the settlement is a result of the Mamdani administration expanding its enforcement capabilities after increasing staff when he took office in January.
“What we’ve been able to show, particularly over the last nine months of the Mamdani administration, is that by investing directly and bringing in the best lawyers, investigators, data scientists, and economists to the government, we can cut through a lot of the noise, identify violations when they happen, and put money back in people’s pockets,” Levine told Al Jazeera.

I’m guessing Door-Dash, Grub Hub, etc. will be ending their business relationships in NYC? What kind of precedent is this for them? Is this something that other big metro areas see and follow suit?

Typical communists. The couch potatoes who are too lazy to get off their asses and go to a fast food joint to buy something to shove down their throat may find out there is not going to be anyone around to bring them their burgers and fries if the communists drive the door dashers into bankruptcy. No more Couch Kings in the hood. They’re going to have to get up and go get their own grub. LOL! Either that or pay 30 or 40 bucks to get their pizzas delivered.
The fries guy gets 25 bucks to cook ‘em and the door knocker get 30 bucks to deliver them. An order of fries is going to cost over 55 bucks. LOL. Oh, and then there is the tip. Ha.
Gig workers like DoorDash Dashers are usually classified as independent contractors, so they generally lack the federal minimum-wage and overtime protections that apply to employees. A company can still “underpay” them when a city or state writes specific rules that treat certain logged-in time as paid time and then the platform’s systems or calculations fall short of those rules. That is exactly what happened in New York City.
NYC’s Delivery Worker Laws, first enforced in December 2023, require apps to guarantee a minimum pay rate (now $22.13 per hour before tips) for two categories of time: trip time (accepting an order through completion) and on-call time (logged in and available for offers that start or end inside the city). Tips do not count toward the floor. Apps must also pay on a set schedule.
DoorDash’s violations, according to the city’s investigation of 152 million transactions, fell into three buckets:
The city described the pattern as systematic rather than isolated rounding errors; DoorDash called the missed and late payments operational mistakes. Either way, once a jurisdiction imposes an hourly floor and defines which minutes count, any mismatch between the platform’s algorithms or payment pipeline and those rules produces underpayment. The $131.5 million settlement (more than $115 million to roughly 264,000 workers plus penalties) is the city’s way of enforcing that local standard.

Are you mad that a company was underpaying what it was legally required to do and got caught for doing it? If you can’t run a business and pay what you are legally required to then go out of business. Not understanding why this is a bad thing.

Looks like this is according to the law and Door Dash admits they violated it and settled.
Is it because his name is included that we don’t want people paid what they are entitled to?
Never mind the rhetoric. This was always the real intention.
Help me understand. A legal requirement to pay a certain wage was not being met. The requirement was in place years before the election and the company fully admits they violated that legal requirement meaning they were cheating the people they employed of what they were legally entitled to.
So communism?
People think they're entitled to everything in communist New York.
Call it what you will, but extortion through the use and abuse of political power is still extortion.
