Javier Milei has condemned the UN as he warned that Argentina would take “matters into our own hands” in its dispute with Britain over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
In a caustic speech at the general assembly in New York, the Argentinian president criticised the UN for being ineffective when it came to the long-running tensions over the British overseas territory known in Argentina as the Malvinas.
“An organisation that set out to defend the territorial sovereignty of its members decided to look the other way regarding the situation of the Malvinas Islands,” Milei said of the UN, adding that Argentina was willing to act unilaterally over recent oil exploration near the territory.
The president criticised the Sea Lion project, a major offshore oil development located in the North Falkland Basin, describing exploitation of the territory’s resources as an “unlawful act”.
The president told the assembly that Argentina would “not remain indifferent to those who exploit resources under illegal foreign occupation”.
“Argentina is not going to sit around waiting for the UN and the international community to live up to their own mandate,” he said. “We’re going to take matters into our own hands.”
Argentina has accused the UK of flouting a 1976 UN resolution ordering both parties to desist from unilateral action on the islands. Milei’s government began sanctions proceedings this month against more than 60 companies and people linked to the oil drilling project.
The Falkland Islands government had approved the field development and production plans for the project, which is a joint venture between an Israel-based energy company and a London-listed oil and gas exploration company.
The UN does not officially recognise either British or Argentine sovereignty and maintains that the archipelago’s status remains a disputed matter that must be resolved through bilateral negotiations.

Britain probably will not defend the Falklands, at the least because it can’t.
However, Argentina has no legal claims to the islands because they were Britains well before Argentina was a country.

Milei needs support of his people and our POTUS. Think the canal. It was the right thing to do turning it over. All of South America approved and lightened up on their opinion of us gringos. Panama’s leftists stuck it to us regarding China’s encroachment. Trump put a stop to that $hit. So lemme tell you all-the issue will be solved before Trump leaves office and the deal will stick as the the GOP holds the WH.

At Argentina, we are aware of who we are historically. We are a former Spanish colony, or even something higher than just a former colony—more precisely, a former viceroyalty. When we fought for our independence, which we did, and we were crucial for our freedom and the freedom of what today are neighboring countries, there was a clear intention to keep governing over what had been Spanish domains; we didn’t declare our independence to leave this place. -—— The Malvinas were clearly under Spanish rule, and we continued appointing a governor there. It was this administration that was forcibly expelled by Great Britain, and since then we haven’t stopped claiming them. -—— That’s why it seems unfair to us that the return of our islands is dependent on a plebiscite of a population implanted by Great Britain. It’s simply absurd, it’s like someone stealing your house and then telling you they’ll give it back if the people using it agree, simply absurd. -—— That the people there are not thrown out by a future Argentine administration and are absorbed as residents of Argentina if they want, is something good and desirable; but they don’t have a vote to decide if we take back our sovereignty there or not. -—— Let’s hope this injustice is solved someday and that Great Britain rethinks and properly returns what is ours. The Monroe Doctrine is an important statement. But it’s not a treaty. It’s not binding on any nation, anywhere.
So it all boils down to who shows up at the gunfight with the biggest pistol.

Lots of explorers and travelers from different countries claimed the islands earlier, but Argentina had jurisdiction before the British swept in and took over.
I could see Labour shooting the wad to use this to stay in power.
