Man gets 6 years for robbing CTA passengers twice while on electronic monitoring {Chicago}

A Chicago man who robbed a Red Line passenger while wearing an ankle monitor for another Red Line robbery he committed while also wearing an ankle monitor has been given six-year sentences for both crimes. But he caught a break because the judge ordered his sentences to be served concurrently even though he committed the crimes on top of each other.

Shannon Stephens, 24, was arrested following the February 19 robbery of a 16-year-old boy on a Red Line train near Garfield, Chicago police said. Stephens and 20-year-old Markell Harper of Gary, Indiana, allegedly approached the boy wearing ski masks and hoodies and demanded his scooter and its key. When the victim said he did not have a key and claimed the scooter was dead, Harper reached into his pocket while holding his waist as if he had a gun, police said.

The boy tried to escape when the train stopped at Garfield, but Stephens and Harper allegedly grabbed at his jacket and tried to pull him back onto the train. They failed, and the boy contacted police in the station mezzanine. Officers stopped the train at 35th Street and found Harper still aboard with the scooter, according to the report. A witness directed officers to Harper as he exited the station at 33rd Street, and the victim identified him, police said.

As part of the perp's sentencing, he needs to be banned from ever using public transportation, at a minimum in that jurisdiction, for ten years.

If he shows up, charge him with criminal trespassing.

He is not to benefit from the service he used to commit crimes against others.
