President Donald Trump has said he is working on a “massive” deal to buy fertiliser from Belarus, pivoting away from main supplier Canada amid an escalating trade dispute, and moving instead toward an ally of Russia.
“The United States is working on a massive deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus,” Trump said on his Truth Social network. “The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our farmers and ranchers.”
In recent weeks Trump has stepped up his trade war with Canada, a long-term US ally and the country’s biggest supplier of potash.
The announcement on Monday shows Washington’s willingness to pursue dialogue with Minsk despite its repression of dissidents and support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The US imports most of its potash – a chemical salt used to manufacture fertiliser – and prices soared after the Ukraine war began in 2022.
In 2024, 79% came from Canada, 11% from Russia and 4% from Belarus, according to the US Geological Survey.
Washington has quietly moved to thaw relations with Belarus under Trump’s second administration. Last week, Belarus freed 25 political prisoners as the US lifted sanctions on two of the country’s companies.
But hundreds remain in prison after President Alexander Lukashenko, in power since 1994, suppressed mass protests over his reelection in 2020, which was followed by a wave of sanctions.
Western countries again squeezed Belarus with sanctions in 2022 after Minsk allowed Moscow to invade Ukraine through its territory.
Belarus’s exiled opposition leader, , on Monday warned that any deal with Lukashenko was “very risky”.

There is a problem, Belarus being land locked is very limited to what they are allowed to ship across neighboring countries. The EU weenies are likely to refuse them permission in order to help Canada.
Hey, wait. Minsk is in Belarus. We could be buying fertilizer from Rochelle, Rochelle.

Carney's behavior in my mind (along with Von der Leyen's recent statements, EU activities in Romania and Hungary, attempts to suppress opposition parties to the ruling regimes in various EU countries, past WEF proclamations, etc.) should be raising a lot of questions.
I think our allies have been playing us since about 1945. Especially the UK. We’ve been suckers but the game has changed under Trump.
Just what we want. Russia having all the leverage over the shipments. They won’t want anything for that, will they? The increase in cost along to both transit it across land and then ship it would likely eliminate any discounts. And it’s a Russian puppet state. That’s who we want as friends?
Not that’s there’s anything to ship. Belarus already said there’s no potash to give. Lukashenko kade that statement six hours before Trump made his post.
Both sides are striking ships and ports in the Black Sea.
They were able to manipulate the foreign policy of the United States for the past 100 years starting with the Wilson Administration and ending with the Trump Administration. But they believe that they can just wait Trump out and it'll be back to business as usual with the next Democratic President.
I'd say especially Israel, at least since 1967.

During WWII potash was extracted from alkali lakes in the Nebraska Sandhills.
I have to wonder about the Greenland deal signed today. I have to wonder if Denmark was in a position where they either sign the deal and save face, or lose Greenland (not because the US was sending in troops, but because Greenland saw a better and more secure future) .
There’s a bunch of potash in Michigan.... however, 4,000 feet down and lots of aquifers to contend with. Saskatchewan potash is a bit less deep (3,000 ft) and the hydrogeology is much better. The potash is 20–30% K₂O in thick, laterally continuous beds. This makes it amongst the highest and most consistent grades in the world.
I think the pressure must have been great to make a deal, Greenland would have been next to impossible to hang on to if America really set its sights on it, but I don’t know if 2 years left of Trump could have accomplished it in time before the left dropped the goal.
