U.S. President Donald Trump says he is working on a “massive deal” to purchase potash from Belarus.
“The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,” he posted to Truth Social on Monday.
Canada is the leading exporter of potash, shipping about 22.9 million tonnes in 2024, accounting for over 39 per cent of global exports according to the Government of Canada.
The leading destination of Canadian exports of potash is the United States. The U.S. imports nearly 85 per cent of its potash from Canada.
Belarus ranks third in potash production behind Russia and Canada.
According to Belarusian media reports Monday, President Alexander Lukashenko said even if there was a desire to enter western markets, there is nothing left to supply.
Reuters reported that potash from Belarus remains under EU sanctions, and the landlocked country has been barred from exporting via the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda since February 2022.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, whose province provides the U.S. with more than 86 per cent of its potash supply from Canada, said Trump’s tentative deal is “wrong and it doesn’t make sense.”

It would be a good deal, IF, it pulls Lukashenko from Putin.
Contrary to what most think, Lukashenko and Putin don’t like each other.
That’s right. It’s a friendship of convenience and necessity. Pulling them apart would be huge.
IF its significantly cheaper we should definitely look into it. Besides, diversification of sources is a good idea.
Another condition should be that Belarus stops trying to force third-world refugees into Poland.

Also, for years, decades really, US agricultural production has been under attack by the left (the usual buzzword is "globalists"), usually under the whole "climate change" or "monoculture" banner.

There was another thread about this last night. The issue seems to be that the countries bordering Belarus are not going to allow this export through their countries. Meaning Poland, Lithuania, Latvia are not going to allow the transit of rail cars from Belarus to transit their countries to get to the Baltic. The only way would be through RUSSIA to get to the port of Saint Petersburg.
Plus, the rail cars/tracks in Belarus do not conform with the gage of the Polish railcars. So, it would have to be trucked to their ports. Again, there are trade issues currently prohibiting this.
Which is why for that to work Belarus has to make some major concessions. And Putin will not sit idly by if that happens.

It makes sense if you realize that trolling is part of PDJT’s methodology. I wonder if Carney is going to try to ‘bump into’ PDJT today at the UN.... would be fun to watch that meeting.

We should not be that dependent on a hostile nation.
With the current trade relationships with Canada's current gubermint, it makes perfect sense to have an alternate source of supply.
Plenty of potash in the USA. A hundred years ago we were a net exporter of it.
If the lawyers, politicians and ‘greenies’ would just let us extract and process it, we could be so again, and to Hell with Canada and Belarus.
One of the largest development projects in Canada right now is the massive BHP Jansen potash mine in Saskatchewan that is estimated to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-$15 billion when completed. It's actually one of the most critical projects for the well-being of North Americans, considering the importance of potassium chloride in the production of fertilizer.
He's probably losing his mind right now with the idiocy coming from the leadership on both sides of the border.
Sounds like the President is just negotiating with Canada through these statements, not signing actual deals.
