The parish council chair of Piddington, an English village with a population of around 350, has told Newsweek they plan to formally ask to join the United States if the British government goes ahead with its plan to house 1,250 male asylum seekers at a site on the edge of the village.
President Trump has made little secret of his desire to expand American territory, suggesting at various points that Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal could come under Washington’s authority.
Speaking to Newsweek, Piddington chair Tim McNally said the parish council would proceed with plans to join the US unless the asylum plan is scrapped, adding: “We know conversations have been had with [President] Trump about this.”
The 51st State?
McNally said the Piddington parish council could seek “the support of the United States to become their 51st state” adding that they had written a letter to President Trump and sent a dossier to the American embassy laying out their case.
Parish councilor Joe Marshall told Newsweek he backs the proposal commenting: “It’s a great idea. America have done this before… America have had their independence and civil war and I think for us we are at the beginning of ours. I think going to America and showing them we are paying our taxes without representation in the same way to how America felt 250 years ago…
“President Trump is one of those people that has a moral compass which means when certain things don’t sit right with him he holds our government to account over it. Ultimately this is a topic that’s quite high up in his agenda because it covers both military and also the immigration system…I’m sure it’s something he’d happily grant us an opportunity to join or at least be recognized.”

Parts of the UK could become states of the United States? Seems far-fetched.
350 people would make a pretty small state. Maybe a territory.
OK, but only if they change their name.
We wouldn’t want them. To the left of Canada.
If they would ever get the chance to join us, I and a good many other military folks would pay to live there and defend them from the savage, third-world and quite untrustworthy Muslims and other refuse. I’ve lived in the UK back when it was great, and I cannot believe that it will allow a country which has produced so much to lower itself to the level of Islam.
It's totally far-fetched. They're doing it for publicity, to embarrass London into backing off with their planned migrant invasion of the town.
I’m smiling but underneath this isn’t quite as funny. What we see here is a group wishing a divorce from a predatory government, one with whose policies a majority of its citizens agreed, at least until recently when the consequences came home. They’re not going to get their divorce. They are going to get the consequences. And nobody is going to be able to do a damn thing about it.
I honestly looked at least 3 times, to make sure it wasn’t the Babylon Bee.

When reality is jokier than ever - a person old enough to remember a more sane past - is going to question it.
Far-fetched? Perhaps, but Great Britain once had colonies west of the Atlantic. Turnabout is fair play. Just be sure to limit the colonists to the list of residents’ names. Otherwise, the Brits will pack the village solid with their boat people out of pure spite.
Maybe Pissington?
They could make a toy bear and call it the Piddington USA Bear to piss off the Brits.
As if we would allow part of California to become part of Canada…not happening.
Perhaps not a majority, as Conservatives + Reform UK outnumber the Liberal Democrats in that area....

Canada has to take all or nothing, then I’m all in for it.
But they probably could be a territory. We have those in far off places. Rose Still is about the same distance as Piddington, England.
The community is too small to be a state. Maybe the city of La Habra, Calif. could annex it.
To the British: Learn to drive on the correct side of the street. Then we’ll talk. That includes getting semi truck driver’s licenses. 🚘🚘🚘🚘🚓🚓🚑🚑
They just want to enjoy the 2nd Amendment.
