A drone hit the cooling tower of Russia's Kursk nuclear power plant, near the border with Ukraine, but caused no fire, the UN nuclear watchdog said on Friday, calling for "maximum military restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) "has been informed that the cooling tower of a reactor unit of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in the Russian Federation was hit by a drone early on Thursday".

"It was reported that the unit was operating at the time, but its operating mode did not change and there was no fire," the IAEA said on X.

The IAEA has repeatedly warned of the dangers of fighting around nuclear plants following Russia launching its military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022.

If I were the Russians, I’d stop naming things, “Kursk”.

I dont know how they make cooling towers in the USSR, but you could fly a Cessna into one of our cooling towers and probably be unable to find any damage, so this quite possibly much adu about nothing

Yep...even if the cooling tower was damaged to the point where it couldn’t function, there are multiple redundancies in the ability to remove heat from the reactor core. Once the reactor shuts down, you just have to keep up with the decay heat, which is not difficult. The reactor plant is designed for this.

But anytime you say the word ‘nuclear’ people just freak out and become irrational. Sad really.

That is a good point. If everyone knows drones can’t seriously hurt a cooling tower like the above posters are saying...what is to say Russia did not do it themselves for world sympathy and excuse to escalate.

"Whose drone?"

LOL. The woke news has decided that you do not need to know that it is the UkeNazis that are attacking nuclear power plants.
