The Trump administration will allow an Iranian delegation to attend the United Nations General Assembly next week, albeit with some restrictions, a State Department spokesperson said Thursday.
The decision to grant Iranian top officials visas to travel to New York City for the annual meeting of global leaders comes seven months into the U.S. war with Iran.
“Consistent with our host country obligations, the core delegation from the Iranian regime will be able to attend U.N. General Assembly High Level Week,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The delegation will be under travel restrictions and will face prohibitions on the purchase of luxury and other goods per our policy.”
The Iranian delegation’s trip comes at a sensitive time, as the U.S. military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have continued attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which some 20% of the world’s oil flowed before the war.

These people are our sworn enemies. They even put a $50 million bounty on Trump.
This is utter stupidity. It is not "diplomacy", it is not "deal making".
This is the Iranians making Trump and our entire country look foolish.
Does Trump want to sweep the elections less than a month and a half from now? It's really simple. Just arrest these bastards as soon as they step off the plane. To hell with the United Nations.
I live in the upstate of South Carolina. The biggest radio personality in this entire region, Tara Servatius, is LIVID about Trump giving visas to these Iranians. I am too.
This isn't how conservatives act.
If someone wants to try to explain to me how I'm wrong, I will absolutely welcome it.
Roach Motel , they check in but never check out
I’m sure muslim Mamdani will give them a warm welcome and free 5-star hotel stays
Trump isn’t a conservative, he was a populist. Always was. These days, I am getting shades of Dementia Joe outta Trump, so I have no clue who is directing what anymore.
It kinda exposes the neocon claim that these people are the devil incarnate as a total sham, doesn't it?
Who knows. Maybe he’s putting them up in the Trump Tower.
I’d like to see the UN pancaked in a controlled demolition — while filled to the brim with it’s teeming mass of globalists and terrorists.
What this is is part and parcel of having the UN in NYC. Enemies of the US get to enter the US often with the restriction of NYC alone and no where else if on official UN business. Don’t like it then kick the UN out. This has been the case for as long as the UN has been in NYC. The US back in the immediate post war era wanted this and NYC to be the capital of the world by having the UN.
It is excellent that you are confused.
That is called cognitive dissonance.
It is the beginning of wisdom.
Oh, grow the ‘Ell up. He and they are adults, dealing with adult problems. Now whiny little TWOTs grabbing at anything to whine about on a two-bit radio station.
You do not quit talking with enemies just because of a war — unless your goal in the war is genocide. You must always be looking for a peaceful way out. Letting them, grudgingly, into NYC is one way to signal to the world that the US controls this.
Mebbe you should be asking a sensible question instead of bytching. Like: what did they give up to attend the “street theater” that is the UN?
Ohhh-kaaaayyy...
Trump is not a conservative. He's a cult of personality populist. It won't do you any good looking for a coherent policy. There isn't one.
Are we at war or not? This seems like “limited war” more and more. It certainly doesn’t seem like we are trying to obliterate the leadership, which I thought was our goal.
Good grief. Inviting the IRGC here is like allowing the Nazi’s to come to NYC during WWII for a Bund meeting.
The answer to your question is in the first sentence of the quote:
“Consistent with our host country obligations...”
Why?
1) The United Nations Headquarters Agreement
2) Trump is seeking an exit from this war
3) By letting Iran’s diplomats in, he is attempting to appear to be reasonable
4) Trump is again claiming that Iran wants to make a deal which means that Trump really wants to make a deal
We did it for the Soviets and Chinese in the past.
Unless we kick the UN out of the country we are obligated as the host country to allow members to attend the meetings.
Its not Trump doing anything wrong.
“This isn’t how conservatives act.”
I will disagree with you. In their country they just kill the people they don’t like. We live in a democracy where everyone gets their say.
They are under severe travel restrictions, guarded at all times, and never allowed out of overseeing except in bathrooms and sleeping. Give them their say. Having them try to justify their actions in a world conference that displaying that they are sub-human could be beneficial. We are looking for help in the region. Maybe this will assist getting that. Or identifying those that support them right out in the open for us to deal with independently. Diplomacy is a tool. You don’t have to cut off limbs on a tree with HE.
