The AI Doom Is Y2K, Climate Change, and COVID Rolled Up Into One Package
Hot Air ^ | 09/16/2026 | David Strom

Posted on 09/16/2026 9:01:28 AM PDT by DugwayDuke

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that the rollout of the current round of AI panic was pre-planned and that the incidents that "triggered" it were staged, but there is no direct proof.

The battle is for centralized control of AI which could create the most powerful system of surveillance, censorship, and control ever built.

The fight over data centers is another facet of the same battle.

It’s a push for centralized control from outside the US. The political motive is an attack on our sovereignty.

Yes AI entails risks. There are also huge opportunities, especially when it moves downmarket to the desktop. That will happen soon, and it is far preferable to the massive investment in huge data centers.

To my mind, “the cloud” is more of a problem, as it puts control of our data in the hands of Sergei Brin and Bill Gates.

These AI people aren't so smart. So AI is going to take over the grid and utilities and shut off
everyone's power. OK, then. So why don't they disconnect grid utilities from communicating
with each other? You can't shut down "the grid" if it refuses to play along.

It's not quite that bad, yet. And it's mostly media hype from the usual suspects.

AI and ‘data centers’ are just inevitable growth of computer systems.

40 years ago there was one desktop computer at my workplace.

Then there were many

Then people started making them. Dell was in a garage. Microsoft was still doing ‘turtle graphics’.

Then things grew where factories are computerized.
Now we need even more computing power, so - data centers.

It's called ‘economies of scale’ and it's a fundamental law of economics just like ‘supply and demand’.

It explains why mom and pop groceries are so small and steel plants are so large.

I have a lot of conflicting views on how/if AI should be “regulated”, but I think it needs to be pointed out:

The Y2K issue was NOT overblown (except in scifi fantasy worlds) - it was a serious problem and a ton of time and money was spent to resolve it.

The rollover was pretty seamless beyond a few silly hiccups here and there NOT because the core matter didn’t matter, but because it was pointed out YEARS in advance and a lot of systems were remediated (with some difficulty, in some cases) to prevent problems.

“The battle is for centralized control of AI...”

It will be it’s own controller.

Modern AI is analogous to the development of nuclear technology in the decade following WWII

AI is dual use technology with enormous potential to do amazing things but it is also a powerful weapon that could potentially create massive destruction if abused

Nevertheless, the misuse of AI is a real issue, and the hysterics distract from addressing that.

I still have a print out somewhere from an online digest whose users would submit emails, they would get collated, an then a newsletter would be auto sent out twice a week for users to respond for queries. The date for the January 1, 2000 newsletter coming from the server read: January 1, 1900.

Funny back then, until one thinks about what would have happened if a big effort hadn't been undertaken to update systems. BTW, isn't there a 2038 issue lurking out there? I seem to recall reading about that somewhere.

YES. Its why Obama and the Democrats, all in unison, with the same message, 2 days ago declared the need for AI "guardrails" and "Government oversight."

This is an opportunity for development of insurance markets badly in need of modernizing to assess competing risks. Hopefully, not to be centralized by the Fed-or-ill grub-a-mint. This is where Federalism could generate a serious advantage for our country.

That’s the problem. We cannot allow oligarchs who tilt one way influencing everything. I would rather store my financial files on physical media and not the cloud.

I keep waiting for any reporter to ask the AI CEOs:
“It’s still just 1s and 0s, right?
So it can only do what you tell it to do, right?
What are you telling it to do?”

And then there is this story proving AI was made by narcissists, for narcissists:
