Omaha, NE — More than a decade after Sarah Root was killed in a drunk-driving crash, her family says they finally have the justice they fought for.

Root was 21 when she was killed in Omaha in January 2016. She had recently graduated from Bellevue University with a 4.0 GPA and planned to pursue a master’s degree in criminal investigations.

Eswin Mejia was driving drunk and at a high rate of speed when he hit Root’s vehicle. He was released on a $5,000 bond and later fled to Honduras.

After nearly a decade, Mejia was tracked down, brought back to Omaha and sentenced in February to 20 to 22 years in prison.

“Getting justice for Sarah was our next main goal. We have gotten the law passed as an amendment, and so the last piece of it we needed to get justice for her and we were able to do that,” said Michelle Root, Sarah’s mother.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Excerpt: The meeting came as Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Sen. Pete Ricketts met with the Root family. Mullin introduced the family to three of the officers who had arrested Mejia.

Personally, I think Honduras knew where he was the whole time and turned him over to curry favor woth Trump.

The real tragedy is if he was a citizen, he would get 2 if not less years.

Family got their guy but no other drunk victim is helped in their case.

It's been a long, sad story...

I've followed it since 2016. I still think something should be done with these judge's that issue the low bail!

The prosecutor asked for and got a low bail because they treated him as a citizen. The good thing was after Trump shined the light on the issue, bail for illegal aliens went up into the millions. One Omaha illegal alien killed another one and his bond was set at a couple million.

Honduras is a corrupt and incompetent cesspool.

As is most of the rest of Pan and South America. Including Mexico.

I remember the night she died. I was on FR very late and a prayer request came in from the father of her best friend. She had graduated that day at the top of her class and was en route home after celebrating. I believe that the illegal drunk-driving alien had rear-ended her at a stop light. (I may be wrong about that...) Her condition was not good and the next day, the Freeper reported that she had passed away. I didn’t know her, except through prayer. God bless her and the Root family. She is an angel, and thankfully our President knows how angelic her family is in its loss and grief.
