“I would hate to see China win the war on AI… I have a sense that China is funding the opposition to AI [data] centers.”
That was Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) in a Breitbart News interview on Aug. 31 warning that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) might be funding opposition to data centers — there are more than 5,400 data centers nationwide according to Cloudscene — utilized by artificial intelligence (AI) and other internet companies to store and process large amounts of data used every day on our smart phones, computers and by large critical infrastructure including financial, educational, communications, entertainment, medical, military, emergency dispatch and other government institutions, and utilities, water management and the power grid.

China wants to end a lot of things. Too bad Trump has shown them Joe easy it is to cut their oil off.
I don’t think AI advances can be stopped.
Someone is going to dominate and get there first (wherever “there” is).
Might as well be us. We can use AI to defend ourselves from Chinese AI.
“You can’t stop what’s coming. That vanity.”
It would appear one of the factors people have a disdain for in data centers is likely the overbuild going on. These centers don’t seem to built upon the premise of supply and demand, but more like ‘we’ll build them, make billions and the taxpayers will get stuck with the bill’ after many projects fail much like the dot.com mess years ago. Energy bills for the consumer is just one example.
It is a fake demand propagated knowing that taxpayers will foot the bill via a criminal, worthless Congress when the overbuild fails.
Oh yeah, it’s China China China!!!
Never mind that reasonable people aren’t too keen on the ever-growing surveillance apparatus all around us, driving the need for those ‘data’ centers. The data is YOU.
I’m looking forward to seeing how desktop/laptop computing goes in the next few years when they have chips that can handle the AI processing. Will people stop paying subscriptions? How will datacenters fund themselves? Will be interesting to see how all this plays out.
The only thing I haven’t cared for is the topic of wastewater. Assuming it’s true, I do prefer hearing about the data centers being built that recycle and reuse their water rather than simply dumping it back into the water supply.
Data centers don’t really pollute water; they just heat it. Cooling towers can solve that problem.
The commies in this country will not allow “AI” because the “I” will defeat all their propaganda.
The commies in this country will not allow “AI” because the “I” will defeat all their propaganda. They can’t do a covid lockdown with “AI”. They can’t have 20 sexes with “AI”.
There’s a bit of conflation going on w/data centers and AI.
Data centers are used as part of an already developed AI’s IMPLEMENTATION.
The RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT of new AI does not require a data center.
I was part of a group that stopped a AI center in rural Oklahoma.
I don’t care if they build one across the road from you, I just don’t want it across from me.
They can use industrial parks and closed military bases.
Yet when asked it is just another NIMBY item. Similar to natural gas lines, refineries, nuclear plants, wastewater treatment plants, cell towers, wind mills, transmission lines and prisons.
Everyone wants CHEAP electricity and instantaneous internet responses to any simple question or search.
Yet, no one wants the infrastructure in their neighborhoods.
The only one the liberals do not mind cutting the forests down and covering the landscape with are SOLAR PANEL FARMS.
NIMBY is a terrible phrase but yes, there are plenty of what EPA calls brownfield that would do nicely.
“Anti-data centers”... are those centers that contain no information whatsoever? I might start one of those, and make like $1 M I L L I O N dollars and rule the world, muwahahahahah!
