Israel has blown up a key tunnel network built by the Hezbollah group in Lebanon, causing a 4.1 magnitude tremor from a blast that filled the night sky with flames and billowing plumes of smoke.
The explosion on Thursday, which sent shockwaves rippling across the region for miles, obliterated the major underground complex built by the Iran-backed terrorist organisation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday evening it had demolished the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. It is understood 1,100 tons of explosives were used.
Footage released by Israel's defence minister Israel Katz shows the dark night skies emblazoned with orange fire as smoke billows out from the destroyed tunnels. The video was captioned: 'We promised and we delivered. The terrorists were eliminated and the Ali Taher tunnels were destroyed. Kudos to the IDF.'
Meanwhile, the operation was captured by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Israeli sources said dozens of Hezbollah fighters were found dead inside the tunnels – which have long been seen as a flashpoint in the Israel-Hezbollah war.
'This is strategic terrorist infrastructure that was built over two decades, with Iranian funding and planning,' said a joint statement by Netanyahu and Katz.
The destruction 'completes the achievement of operational control over the Ali al-Taher ridge - above and below ground,' the statement added.
The United States Geological Survey meanwhile reported a 4.1 magnitude tremor in the area, after Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that Israel carried out a 'massive explosion' on the Ali al-Taher ridge in the Nabatieh region, 'causing tremors and a powerful rumble'.

First Bobby Kennedys speech and now this, what a great morning.
1,100 tons of explosives..... That’s a big Kaboom.
For perspective, 1 kiloton equals 1,000 tons of TNT
The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were roughly 15 to 20 kilotons.
I wish it were possible to empty the ocean (global wide actually) into these tunnels, including Gaza and so forth. And keep it there.
I wondered why the allah akbar chorus here had been silent.
An idea, but this ridge is many miles from the sea. And significantly “uphill” as these tunnels were in the “ridge” above the city itself - which is inland. Unlike the Gaza shoreside tunnels.
And even in Gaza, the tunnels themselves were (most of the time) so shallow that they were above sea level.
there goes 20 billion dollars of iranian bucks up in smoke and flame ...
They blowed up real good!
CC
Huge secondary explosion.
They knew exactly where to drop it.
This might be the end of Hezbollah as it probably took out 1000 terrorists and their key staging area.
They have the right idea. Leave those people alone.
Looks like gopher blasting on steroids!
Looks like gopher blasting on steroids!
Great big gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts!
There will be more where those came from.
That would be a wonderful idea if possible.
I don’t think Israel “dropped it”, my understanding is that they accessed the tunnels in multiple locations, added explosives, and then detonated everything at once. Possibly arms stores went up too: Israel would have little use for, say, North Korean shells that didn’t fit their artillery anyway, whacky performing rockets, etc., but I don’t see a lot of evidence of rockets and such cooking off.
1.1 kilotons detonated inside a closed space.
BIG kaboom.
Hooray for Israel! Keep up the great work.
