The great census debate is back.
After Chief Justice John Roberts illegally colluded to block a question on citizenship from the last census, President Trump is vowing to bring it to the next census. The usual response is to misappropriate the 14th amendment, which was dealing with past attempts to limit the representation of slaves, and scream that it will limit representation.
True and that’s the whole point.
Elected officials are supposed to represent the people who vote for them. Not the people who don’t vote for them. This is a point so simple that challenging it also challenges the whole premise of the American Experiment in political representation. If non-citizens should be used as a basis for apportioning congressional districts, then why not let them also vote? Democrats would agree with this last part, they would just deplore the legal limitations which were more clearly written into the laws.

That is a big part of why California and some other states are the way that they are. We have a population that is not legally allowed to vote and yet that shapes elections. And taxpayers are effectively outvoted by that population which then extracts their resources for welfare.
No taxation for illegal alien representation is a basis for representative government. People who can’t vote shouldn’t be allowed to shape electoral districts and then extract taxpayer money.
Otherwise why even have representative government by way of elections?

I hope that is not what he meant to say...I think the operative word should have been “can’t” not “don’t”.
How about another 3/5 compromise? That apportionment problem is exactly what the compromise addressed.

For now, I would be happy with another 3/5 compromise. Deport 3/5 of all illegals now and get the rest after that!
I remember that when the US Constitution was being debated in 1787, the Northern states wanted slaves to count as "zero" towards representation. The Southern states wanted them counted as a "full" person. The compromise reached was that they would be counted at 3/5ths for the purpose of representation.
When the Northern states realized all former slaves would vote 100% for them, they suddenly insisted that they be counted fully for representation.
Now people might claim they did this for moral reasons, and completely ignore the fact that this gave them power. I've become cynical enough to believe that everything is done for the purpose of gaining power, and it is never done because it is morally the right thing to do.
I will just point out these same Northern liberals, descended politically from the old Northern liberals, now want to count all the illegal aliens, because it gives them power.
The opening of the borders was never about votes, per se.
It’s always been about apportionment.
Without 20,000,000 warm bodies packed in the Blue Hives the Dems would lose 10-12 House seats.

The US government knows that I’m a US citizen and where I live. It need not send me a questionnaire.
Voter registration could be integrated with the census.
The Constitution requires the census to count every person.
The census could be every four years, or even two years.
The census could track people by a number of means.

Florida probably is about two House seats short because the census is only done once a decade.
The ilicitos tend to go wherever they can find jobs.
Red states therefore might have larger percentages of them.
I really can't agree with that statement. Elected officials represent all of the people who voted legally
But non-citizens should not be allowed to vote, and illegal aliens should not be used in apportionment.
