Accused serial squatter takes over $1M home in tree-lined NYC neighborhood: ‘Awful situation’

Residents of an upscale Queens neighborhood are enraged over a brazen serial squatter who moved into a local $1.1 million home — and it’s not the first time he’s pulled off the scam, according to a report.

Accused con man Vernon Glass parked himself in the million-dollar home in the quiet, tree-lined community of Bayside more than two years ago, after the 2018 death of elderly homeowner and longtime resident Richard Klibschon, ABC Eyewitness News reported.

*** The home at 2340 205th St. had remained vacant after Klibschon, who lived alone and had no family, passed away, according to the report.

But that changed in March 2024, when neighbors first spotted the unwanted occupant who moved in.

A man at the home Sunday kicked a reporter for The Post off “his” property and lashed out at local residents, outrageously claiming that the “only thing you should be reporting on is this racist ass block.”

The man living in the home as been described as an “illegal occupant” in court papers,***

But despite their best efforts, the residents have yet to get him evicted.

It’s not the first squatter scam Glass has allegedly pull off, Eyewitness News noted.

Glass also is accused of moving into a vacant Nassau County, LI, home in 2018, changing the locks and renting out the property to three people for more than $9,000, ABC reported at the time.

In that case, he ended up getting kicked out and sentenced to five years probation on a misdemeanor in December 2019, the outlet said.

Where government and the ostensible justice system fail, people will naturally look to the mafia or extra-legal organizations to protect them and give them at least a facsimile of justice.

After all, vigilante justice is better than no justice at all.

“After all, vigilante justice is better than no justice at all.”

If the TV documentaries regarding organized crime are to be believed, it’s been gong on for a long time. The documentaries consistently portray early 1900s NYC as being crime ridden with an ineffective police force. The mafia sold “protection” which was protection from the mafia, but, a real benefit was that if someone messed with you and you were paying protection, that person was in deep doo doo.

It seems NYC is ripe for the sale of protection.

The judge who let Glass go on probation should give up his house to Glass.

Long past time for a few of the male neighbors to visit this loser and give him a very visable and long-lasting attitude adjustment. Oh, wear masks because the cops are not allowed to intervene when masks are worn. (I long for the days when the police would go in and “take care” of turds like this. You know that they want to.)

The need to stop calling these criminal squatters. They are trespassers. There are conditions when squatting is legal but it involves much more than refusing to leave a property after entering it without or with permission. It takes years to establish that a property you occupy can be legally yours. You also have to pay the taxes on that property. This is the NY state law,
“Occupy the property without the owner’s permission
Live there continuously for the statutory period of 10 or 30 years
Use the property as their primary residence
Make improvements or maintain the property
Pay property taxes during the occupation period”

So these people are either trespassers which is a criminal offense. Or there is a dispute over whether they are tenants which is a civil matter and unfortunately the owner has to do an eviction.

Trust me types like these people know the law down to the punctuation and use it over and over again to occupy dwellings. Their hope is for a financial settlement. I think prosecuting them under fraud laws should be looked into.

A misdemeanor? I think I see a good part of the problem.

Steal a car, that’s a criminal matter. Steal from a store, that’s a criminal matter. The police will (usually) respond quickly and forcefully.

Squatting is stealing possession of a home. But that’s usually a civil matter, one that takes months if not years to resolve.

Very odd.

It seems NYC is ripe for the sale of protection.

19th early 20th century NYC and other NE cities, the "mafia" was brought over from European Irish, Italian, even Jewish lands/societies where government was capricious and unstable, unjust, and rule of law didn't exist.

America's Anglo-Saxon highly developed social conventions, and rule-of-law norms, strong local governance and participation, and above all the US Constitution, overcame these transmitted old-world maladies, and trust in government and its ability to protect and serve suppressed the notions and need for "mafia."

IMHO, quite the opposite in 2026 America, we are now creating here those same civil and political maladies which will make "the mafia" grow here.

That new form will not be familiar TV "goombas." It will come in the form of Shariah and self-organizing Muslim "morality squads."

For what is Shariah, except another historical and religiously-justified form of MAFIA?
