Record number of Washington mail-in ballots uncounted after primary election, report finds

Elected officials in Washington state are sounding the alarm about an increase in uncounted ballots, especially in rural areas. Their warnings come as President Donald Trump ramps up his fight against vote-by-mail states.

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs and U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, both Democrats, teamed up Wednesday to announce that significantly more mail-in ballots were disqualified as “late” in the August primary election than in prior elections. That uptick, they said, was a result of changes to U.S. Postal Service postmarking protocols the agency implemented last December.

Across the state, the rate of ballots that were rejected for late postmarks increased by 32% in the August primary, as compared to the August 2024 primary, according to data released by Hobbs and Cantwell’s offices. Rates of rejection were higher in rural counties, per the report. “The post office is taking your ballot as a piece of mail but not stamping it that day,” Cantwell said. “They are waiting and going to a distribution center, and then later postmarking that and may thereby be delaying your actual vote.”

Back when I lived in the Commie State of WA State, there was a movement for all the counties East of the Cascades Mountains to break away from the Commie West side. The State quickly evoked a bill that prohibited counties from breaking away to form another state. Back in the 1990s I think it was, maybe early 2000s, not exactly sure. But the East side is sick of the West side, where the majority of the population lives (mostly commies) ruling them, taxing them, etc., voting them non-existent. Kind of like the commies would do to America without the Electoral College. That way, the big coastal blue cities and middle of the country commies, would rule over all the rest of us.

We Washingtonians were stupid to allow mail in ballots only. Stupid, I say.

Maybe President Trump’s crackdown is causing the westside demoncRATS to shudder. IF the voting were legitimate Dino Rossi, a Republican, would have won the gubernatorial race against Christine Fraudoire (nee Gregoire) in 2004. demoncRATS stole that election early on. Twice Dino Rossi (Republican) won the vote & the recount. Then when the demoncRATS paid for the 3rd recount, an unknown box of uncounted ballots magically appeared deep in the heart of demoncRAT territory that put Fraudoire in the winning seat. And no amount of court action would change that verdict. The 2004 gubernatorial election was stolen pure & simple.

This doesn’t sound like a new problem, so why the outcry about it now?

“This doesn’t sound like a new problem, so why the outcry about it now?”

These huge increases in disqualified ballots have occurred because the USPS changed its procedures. Formerly, your ballot would be marked with a postmark at your local post office. Now, the ballot might sit there for a while (days, even), before being taken to a regional sorting center — and the postmark would be applied only at the regional center.

The result is that the voter puts the ballot in the mailbox, or maybe even brings it to the local post office, well before Election Day. The voter assumes that it will have a postmark showing that it was timely mailed. The postmark is delayed, however, so it shows a date after Election Day, so the ballot is disqualified.

The lag time between mailing and postmarking tends to be greater in rural areas, so the USPS change disproportionately affects Republicans.
