Hundreds of tourists, including 12 Britons and three Americans, are missing after devastating floods and mudslides swept away buildings and bridges along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Houses and roads were swept away in Nepal while officials in China-controlled Tibet said they feared 'major casualties' with some missing in the county of Gyirong after a mudslide hit a land crossing between the neighbours this morning.
Authorities have so far found the bodies of 31 people following the natural disaster, amid fears that many more will be found as search and rescue operations get underway.
Terrifying footage shows a tsunami wave of flood water crashing through a town, sweeping away everything in its path in the mountainous Rasuwa region of Nepal.
In Tibet, one clip showed the Chinese-owned Gyirong Port land crossing being annihilated by the flood. Dozens of people were seen running away in terror seconds before the water and mud crashed into the structure and wiped it out.
Experts believe a 4.4-magnitude quake triggered an ice avalanche which in turn blocked the Lhende river. Water then built up behind the blockage before bursting downstream with devastating consequences.
There are fears that a second flood may plunge Nepal, Tibet and neighbouring India into further chaos. Flood alerts were issued in the populous northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as they border Nepal and several rivers flow down the mountains into their plains.
Nepali officials said as many as 384 tourists and trekkers are unaccounted for, made up of 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens.
Among the unaccounted are 12 from the UK, 105 Indian nationals, four from South Africa, 17 from Malaysia and three from the United States. One each from Australia and the Netherlands are also unaccounted for.

As more Westerners have the money and resources to go on these exotic vacations, more things like this are going to happen. Maybe not on this scale, but they are putting themselves at risk for crime, diseases and risk of injury that won’t be treated in hospitals with Western standards. I had a friend who went on a safari in Africa and had their van rammed by buffalo. No one was seriously hurt but people got bruises because the van was really knocked around. If you go into nature, things like this will happen.

Either way, it appears the Chinese might want to consider heeding some paraphrased old marketing advice: it's not nice to mess with Tibet's Mother River

The Himalayan region, which crosses Nepal and several nearby countries including India, is especially vulnerable to heavy rains, floods and landslides because the area is warming up faster than the rest of the world due to human-caused climate change.
Research has shown that extreme weather events including heat waves, heavy rains and melting glaciers have become more frequent in the region.
Researchers at the Kathmandu research group found earlier this year that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region are melting at an accelerating rate, with ice loss rates doubling since 2000 primarily due to rising global temperatures and climate change.
