BAYCHESTER, The Bronx (WABC) -- Three people were shot, one of them fatally, after an apparent car meetup early Sunday in the Baychester section of the Bronx.
The gunfire broke out during the street takeover at East 233rd Street and Boston Road at 5:40 a.m.
Police believe multiple people opened fire and dozens of shots, as many as 60, were fired at the scene.
An 18-year-old man, later identified as Werling Mendez, was shot in the head and died.
Additionally, a 20-year-old woman was shot in the foot and a 22-year-old man was shot in the chest.
Both victims were taken to the hospital, where they were said to be stable.
During the chaos, two women were robbed at gunpoint by three men, and in one of the incidents, they put a gun to her head and stole her phone and chain.
The suspects got away in an Acura, police said.
No arrests were immediately made.
The NYPD has been trying to prevent and stop car meetups and street takeovers, including ones caught on video in Queens within the last year.
In May, police took seven individuals into custody in the same area after a meetup.
People in the local businesses hoped it would quiet down, but it wasn't long before the screeching cars were back.
A bill introduced in the city council last month would have the NYPD formally create a unit to prevent and respond to the takeovers and meetups.
In the meantime, police are investigating exactly what happened and working to identify those behind the deadly violence.
The thugs involved know they’ll just get a slap on the wrist, so they don’t really care.
I remember the Whirling Mendez.
They used to be on the Ed Sullivan Show.
At 5:40 am?
Were they just finishing or just getting started?
