What's Going on With California's War on the Paramount - Warner Bros. Discovery Merger?
Salem News ^ | 24 August 2026 | Amy Curtis

Back in June, the Justice Department approved the Paramount deal to buy Warner Bros., a merger that would give David Ellison control over not just Warner Bros. but CNN and HBO Max, too. The merger is happening because Warner Bros. cannot stand on its own anymore, but the Left isn't happy about this. They think Ellison, who has worked with President Trump in the past, will allow some sort of weird MAGA influence over the network. Advertisement

In July, 12 states moved to block the merger, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, citing concerns about a "reduction in competition" and the "quality of cinema." Have these people seen James Gunn's "Superman" or Nolan's adaptation of "The Odyssey"? The quality cinema ship sailed a long time ago, hit an iceberg, and sank.

Ellison has told senior execs that Paramount Skydance will relocate out of California starting October 1 unless progress is made towards settling that antitrust lawsuit led by Bonta. That's when a $7 million per day "ticking fee" will be charged to WBD shareholders.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

This is about Netflix. Anyone can see the Left wants Netflix to have exclusivity, which the Trump Administration wants to investigate.

* 2029 Presidential Inauguration - if Netflix gets video rights they can block every media outlet from covering it and only give you still photos.

* 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup - Netflix has exclusive rights, they want to ban videos from sources and news outlets only get still photos. Paramount's complaining about Netflix here too because they have Australian rights and Netflix will do anything to ensure CBS affiliates cannot use Australian feeds.

The left has a death grip on the entertainment industry. They will fight to death to keep it. To that end the rat AG’s are using taxpayer money and the courts to make the WB cost so much money that Paramount will give it up and clear the field for leftist Netflix to buy it. It’s an outrageous abuse of power but it’s the rats we are talking about.

There’s no chance of Netflix buying video rights for a presidential inauguration.

Those are required public events.

Hope they move out of the state to Texas - DeSantis wants them in Florida.

They learned nothing from the merger block of Jet Blue and Spirit Airlines (which deserved to go out of business). Jet Blue is limping along precariously...”Some analysts estimate a 75% chance of Jet Blue bankruptcy by 2027.”

“The $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines was prevented by a federal court ruling in January 2024, which sided with a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice under the Biden administration.”

California is hoping to do for WB what they did for Spirit Airlines.

"Required public events" was struck down in 1977's Home Box Office, Inc. v. Federal Communications Commission. This is what the Trump Administration wants to overturn with their FCC policies. By making it pay per view on Netflix, it will complete what became legal in 1977. Trump is trying to reinstate "required public events" to allow networks to have rights to events and shut down premium pay acquiring rights. The WNBA Finals every third year is on premium (Amazon).

Democrats can legally give Netflix exclusive video rights using that case.

Deep State has stop both people and businesses from voting with their feet.

Not to hijack the thread, but NFL stadiums are heavily subsidised by public funds (taxpayers). Frankly, I find it disgusting, appalling, and disingenuous to put them on pay channels only (Amazon Prime, Apple, Netflix, Paramount, even DirecTv, etc.).

If the public is paying for the stadiums, which in every NFL city we are, then the games should be on over the air (OTA) channels, and “free” - as they are paid for by the taxpayers already.

"Hollywood," the collective nickname for the movie industry, is being chased out of Hollywood.

Paramount is already scouting a location in east Austin (per news yesterday). I’m sure they’ll be comfy in Babylon on the Guadalupe.
