Russia Withdraws Ambassador from Britain as Diplomatic Ties Sink to New Low

Moscow leaves its London embassy without an ambassador as Kremlin warns Britain is following a ‘path of confrontation’ over Ukraine

Russia has withdrawn its ambassador to Britain after more than seven years in London, leaving one of Europe’s most important diplomatic relationships without a permanent senior envoy as tensions over the war in Ukraine reach a new and potentially dangerous stage.

Andrey Kelin left his post on July 21st and Moscow has yet to nominate a successor. The Russian embassy in London is instead being run by a chargé d’affaires, reducing the level of political representation between two nuclear-armed states whose relations have deteriorated dramatically since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Kremlin has not formally described the move as a downgrade in diplomatic relations. Russian officials have instead insisted that diplomatic ties remain intact.

But the decision to leave Kelin’s position vacant is nevertheless a potent political signal. It comes at a time when Moscow has become increasingly vocal about Britain’s military support for Kyiv and its willingness to help Ukraine develop the means to strike deep inside Russian territory.

The Russian embassy has accused Britain of pursuing a “path of confrontation” and suggested that the departure of Kelin should be seen against the broader deterioration in bilateral relations.

Moscow has also indicated that the door to improved relations is not permanently closed. The Russian position is that a more constructive dialogue could resume if Britain were to reconsider its approach to the conflict.

Since London is an active participant in the war in Ukraine, it is a legitimate target.

Why is the UK allowing itself to be dragged into a war with Russia?

Pooty-Poot would be smart to totally eschew muzzies.

Somehow I don’t see that happening.

It has been 73 years since Russia and North Korea fought together against Britain, and they didn’t do anything to cause problems with NATO by attacking the British homelands.
