The federal government's ban on carrying firearms in U.S. post offices may soon be over, now that the Dept. of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel has issued an advisory opinion stating the ban does not comply with federal law.
… The OLC opinion argues that in order to legally carry, both the entry into the federal facility and the carrying of the firearm must be for a lawful purpose.
… Carrying arms for self-defense when entering a building held open to the public is a paradigmatic lawful purpose. The Supreme Court recognized as much in District of Columbia v. Heller, when it unequivocally statedֻ thatֻ “theֻ inherentֻ rightֻ ofֻ self-defense”ֻ isֻ “centralֻ toֻ theֻ Secondֻ Amendmentֻ right.”

Keep in mind that we’re technically “breaking the law” just by having a firearm in our car when we enter the PO’s parking lot.
Going to the post office is required in many areas that don’t deliver to the houses, and people incorporate that into their walks, their bicycling, and some people ride motorcycles, yet they can’t carry their gun while doing the walking and bicycling, and who wants to remove their pistol in plain sight and leave it with their motorcycle.
Good luck on that, scotus reaaffirmed the ban of weapons on gov't property and other restrictions.
"The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms."
The OLC is exactly right. The statute allows carry for lawful purposes.
It’s the USPS regulation that forbids carry.
Oh yeah. The notion of USPS employees and firearms conjures fiery memories.
Since a mail-in ballot is a disenfranchising paradigm, the DOJ/OLC hereby states that it is forevermore unlawful to carry a mail-in ballot into any USPS postal service office, and/or placing a mail-in ballot into any USPS receptacle. Punishable by law.
After all, it can't be legal to place a loaded gun into a post office box, neither should it be legal to place a loaded mail-in ballot inside one.
What part of “going postal” don’t they understand?
Those Post Office shooters were employees, not customers.
And the Post Office 100% had blood on their hands for those Post Office shootings. It was difficult to fire a Postal employee so they'd instead make their lives hell until they quit, but some snapped and shot up the workplace.
Hostile Workplace laws came about because of the hostile workplace the Post Office created.
Stupid laws merit disobedience. I oblige regularly.
The problem is when stupid meets stupid law = incarceration.

unless carying a firearm is part of your official duties .... Carrying on Fed Property is illegal.
That represents a dilemma since private citizens are allowed to mail shotguns and rifles to an FFL.
Breaking the law by engaging in your constitutional rights. Absolutely crazy.

Guy got fired, went home, got his firearm, went back in and killed his boss.
Some years ago. Post office was named after the boss.
This has always been a stupid law. It was a knee jerk law passed in the aftermath of a USPS employee going on a killng spree. Where do you think the term “going postal” came from?
