Why Gloria Romero’s Campaign for Obscure Office Will Change CA GOP
New York Post ^ | Aug. 7, 2026 | Joel Kotkin

The most interesting race in California may be Gloria Romero’s run for the oft-ignored position of Lieutenant Governor.

What makes this race different is that Romero is a different kind of Republican whose background constitutes a vigorous challenge to the standard-brand Democrat, Treasurer Fiona Ma.

Romero is a 71-year-old Republican — but also a former Democratic State Senate majority leader and onetime leftist firebrand. Republican National Committeeman Shawn Steel calls her nomination “the most important development for the California GOP in a generation.”

What? She can’t get elected in the demoncRAT-controlled state of CA so she runs as a RINO to try to get elected? The GOP is full of those uglies. Don’t need them.

Yeah, right. She is still a big lefty.

California's elections are so rigged it no longer matters who runs.

Re: "A former Democrat..."

Which means she will cave on EVERY issue that matters!

I would still vote for her, but we have to be realistic.

“Don’t need them.”

That attitude is why we lose. MAGA is a coalition, a sub-group within the larger Republican coalition, which most often has to form a coalition with the Independents.

Its like a quarter back saying “the tackle and guard never carry the ball, never receive a pass...so we don’t need them. and the defense and special teams? We don’t need them. We have the best quarterback and best wide receiver. So we are the best team.”

It is a shame that more people don't understand that.

Yeah, right. She is still a big lefty.

If she didn't change, why would she switch? We all know it's much better to run as a Democrat in CA. At least statewide.

The only problem to that philosophy and we see it repeatedly with the cong’l critters is that when crunch time occurs the and we need their help, the RINOs always side with the RATS.

Most people in California couldn’t identify the Lieutenant Governor if their lives depended on it.

Just having the “R” behind her name won’t be nearly enough to get elected.

More drivel from Kotkin, the clown who told us 35 years ago that they would all assimilate and Don’t Worry, They Only Come to Work!

Then repeats all the evidence that shows he was not wrong, but absurdly wrong: “latinos” - Mexicans - are now 38% of the Caulifonia workforce. Gee, how’d that happen Joel? Maybe because of race preferences and mandates leading to massive warfare on White males? Threats from the government to hire “hispanics” or else? When has any immigrant group come to the United States with such a mandate to buttress them? Were the Italians sacralized as “oppressed minorities” deserving of federal redress?

It never dawns on him that they are in these positions now because of rank discrimination against the Americans that they displaced. “They are now the police” - was there ever a court mandate to impose quotas for say, immigrant Greeks to be in the police force ranks in proportion to their census numbers?

Uh, no.

And that’s where we get Gloria. In the end, she’s still doing what she’s always done: trying to create mandates for her Raza. She doesn’t belive in social egalitarianism. She isn’t fighting for “a chance for everyone”. She’s doing what she and they do always: serving themselves.

She just needed a new venue.

And Kotkin can go stick his prejudices up his butt. When he gloats about the demographic submergence of the Americans - the “English, German and Scots” who started the nation and ARE the nation - he validates the very criticism of this invasion from the Latin Catholic South that has been voiced now for 50 years. It’s exactly what he and his fellow propagandizers said WOULDN’T happen. Now he acts like it’s perfectly normal to be completely displaced by the failed populace of the narcoterrorist disasters of the South, so take that, you impotent WASPs!
