Embattled Rep. Andy Ogles loses Republican primary in Tennessee
Roll Call ^ | Aug 6 | By Mary Ellen McIntire

Posted on 08/08/2026 8:30:56 AM PDT by RandFan

Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles lost his primary Thursday, becoming the third House Republican to lose a renomination bid this year.

Ogles was trailing former state Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, 53 percent to 47 percent, when The Associated Press called the race for the 5th District at 10:10 p.m. Thursday.

The result represents a rare defeat for President Donald Trump, who had reiterated his support for Ogles earlier Thursday, saying on social media that the second-term congressman was doing a “fantastic job.” It’s the second loss this week for a Trump-endorsed Republican, after Navy veteran Amir Hassan came up short in a House primary in Michigan.

Other House Republicans who’ve lost primary challenges this year include Reps. Daniel Crenshaw of Texas and Thomas Massie of Kentucky, while six Democratic incumbents have so far been defeated in their House primaries.

Ogles has been dogged by controversy since he was first elected to Congress in 2022. He’s been accused of embellishing his résumé and is under a House Ethics investigation into his campaign finances. And he drew criticism this year for saying that Muslims “don’t belong in American society” and that “homosexuality has no place in America.”

Ogles was also running in a district that was considerably altered under Tennessee’s new congressional map. Once based in Middle Tennessee, the 5th District now snakes along the Kentucky border, connecting Memphis to the Nashville area.

Perhaps Andy was ogling another term in the House while Charlie was hatching a plan to win.

Huge change in the district map:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee‘s_5th_congressional_district

(FR doesn’t like the link, but a copy / paste into one’s browser should work.)

It’s very easy to see why an Ag guy won. I can’t imagine the district being lost to Dems, it’s redder and more Trump friendly than before.

We also have to keep in mind that some Reps and candidates who ape MAGA are actually like many Chinese products: Shiny and nice looking from the outside, but dubious quality on the inside.

That’s funny.

The loss won’t change anything.

The new 5th district includes the lowland along the Mississippi River. That’s Tennessee’s richest farmland.

Hatcher emphasized his agriculture experience which probably made the difference.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

Last night was another good night for Endorsements, 8-1, and the 1 was a person who I remained loyal to even though he had virtually no chance of winning, and was running against a Great “Trump” Candidate, and former Agricultural Commissioner of Tennessee, named Charlie Hatcher. Good luck Charlie! Run tough and hard. You have my Complete and Total Endorsement! President DONALD J. TRUMP

This one notable because it wasn’t a Trump pick. He backed the incumbent

No, it does not even get close to the Mississippi river.

The district is in middle TN about 140 miles east of the river.

It’s my new district.

He was half right though for Ag guy winning? There were two qualified candidates it seems and he edged it.

Then you better look closer.

TN-5 covers the ENTIRE state border with the river. AND still contains a good amount of central Tennessee southwest of Nashville.

Ogles was a good, solidly conservative Congressman. Hatcher is a squish who throws around the golden “Trump” name as often as he can. The only odd thing is that Trump didn’t simply endorse Hatcher to begin with — Trump adores a good squishy Republican (especially incumbents, which Hatcher was not), as anyone who looks at his endorsements can tell.

Ogles is supported by good conservatives; Hatcher is supported by RINO scumbags like the Haslams.

Hatcher will win easily in November so there’s no danger of the seat being taken by a Democrat, but this situation is absolutely not an improvement over Ogles.

If anything, that describes Hatcher. Not Ogles.

Hatcher will be OK in Congress, certainly not bad.

Ogles was far better.
