Fifteen Ways AI Threatens America, and the Vast Majority Have Only Heard of Five

The American honeymoon with artificial intelligence is over, and the numbers make the divorce official. The new Bentley University-Gallup survey finds 39 percent of Americans now believe AI does more harm than good, up from 31 percent just a year ago, while a mere 9 percent believe the opposite. A separate Athena Insights poll found Americans nearly three times more likely to be concerned than excited about AI’s growing role in society. The people, it turns out, have functioning instincts.

But instincts only get you so far. Ask the average American to name the dangers of AI and you will get the same five answers, the ones that dominate cable segments and congressional hearings. Those five are real. They are also the shallow end of the pool. The deeper threats are the ones almost nobody is naming, because they do not make for good television and because the companies building them have no incentive to advertise.

Scripture gives us the operating principle for moments exactly like this one, when a powerful new thing arrives wrapped in promises:

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

So let us prove all things. Here are fifteen ways AI threatens America. If you have heard of the first five, congratulations, you watch the news. It is the other ten that should keep you up at night.

The Five Most Already Know

1. Your Job
2. Deepfakes and the Death of Proof
3. Your Privacy
4. Scams at Industrial Scale
5. What It Is Doing to Children

The Ten Most Have Not Been Told About

6. The Atrophy of the American Mind
7. Artificial Companions for a Lonely Nation
8. AI in the Pulpit
9. Censorship With a Friendly Face
10. The Sawed-Off Career Ladder
11. Five Companies Becoming the Operating System of Civilization
12. A Surveillance State Built on Commercial Foundations
13. The Grid Cannot Carry the Weight
14. Crime at Machine Speed
15. The Temptation to Build a God

Prove All Things 1 Thessalonians 5:21

None of this is an argument for smashing the machines. Some of these tools will do genuine good, and Christians are not called to panic. We are called to discernment, to testing what we are handed rather than swallowing it, and to holding fast only to what survives the test. The polling shows Americans have begun to test. The task now is to test all of it, including the ten threats the evening news has not gotten around to mentioning, because the most dangerous thing about artificial intelligence was never the robot from the movies. It is the slow, comfortable, unexamined surrender of the faculties, the institutions, and the liberties that a free people cannot afford to lose.

The Temptation to build a God pops up in numerous places. Two come to mind, the novel “When HARLIE Was One”, which finishes up with the super-duper computer Harlie (his technology is that each bit has twelve states, rather than two, making him exponentially more powerful) designs the Graphic Omniscient Device (G.O.D.), which would take all knowledge as input and have all answer as output.

David Bowie’s song “Saviour Machine” (from “The Man Who Sold the World”) also has a super-computer taking over all the problem solving, thanks to President Joe’s dream. Ultimately, it gets bored and threatens to destroy everything, because it can.

3. Your Privacy

Due to the rumor mill and gossip, country conservatives never really had much privacy, so are used to word getting around. Someone has to become a city-slicker socialist that doesn't know any of their neighbor's names to really get their freak on without significant consequences.

How about listing the possible benefits of AI? AI audio recording relationship mangers will likely be a game changer, calling out bad behavior at the time of transgression. If you have a relationship with someone that you highly value, you have to set boundaries and expectations, and stay right on top of it at all times, else the relationship will eventually go sour. Very few people have the womanagement skills do that, however an AI relationship monitor will bring that skill to all.

If AI figures out how to build a microwave radio oven to cook off atoms at will, that will result in unlimited energy and wealth for all.

Nobody knows out artificial super intelligence will play out, and obviously much of it will be bad. But much of it will good, as in very good. We are extremely lucky to be living in the most interesting of times.

What about applying the Three Laws to AI? Haven’t heard anything about that.

Oh, and #11. Skynet

The genie is out of the bottle ……..
Mama’s words were, “These computers are going to kill us all”.

My personal opinion: Mama was nearly absolutely correct. Mama didn’t understand the software progression of programming.

Somewhat related. Paul Harvey used to often say, “Self-government without self-regulation will not work.”

We are there. We, or at least some who should be more responsible and realize what is happening are guilty of not self-regulating.

We are also at the same place of the Gilded Age and then some more, a lot more and the age of the robber barons. Only a few are participating in wealth and prosperity, many of those participants are obscene. Last time this happened it gave rise to another communism attempt in society. It is what happens in times like these. The nuts find a sympathetic audience in the downtrodden and blocked less successful.

Don’t harp on me about being anti-capitalist or something equivalent. For just about ever money has been like manure, it does no good if you don’t spread it around and that does not necessarily mean giving it away either.

No we're not. Every society on earth in every era has 80 percent of its wealth concentrated in 20 percent of the population. This was true in the Soviet Union and other "communist" countries. Maybe you've been reading too much Dickens or Karl Marx.

I spent the better part of my working career as a Network Engineer, building networks of routers, switches, and voip devices using Cisco Systems equipment.

Now that I’m retired, I’ve tried to keep my hands involved with technical subjects, reading, watching videos, etc...

In the last few weeks I’ve been working with Anthropic’s Claude Code tools, I started with the free version and now I’ve upgraded to a 1-year subscription.

I’m barely scratching the surface of what these tools can do, but I’ve been amazed at the possibilities.

IMO, the 15 things that are considered AI threats, most all AI could be used to defend yourself from the threats of AI.

I believe in the creativity of people, far beyond what I could do, I CAN see over the next few years, AI being used to created incredible new opportunities for people using the AI tools that are available.

I can see entire industries being brought back to life in the US because of AI. Think about the textile industry, most of that has been shipped overseas to slave or forced labor countries.

Now using AI combined with robotics, I don’t see why the textile industry couldn’t be rebuilt in the US.

“I don’t see why the textile industry couldn’t be rebuilt in the US”
-
It can’t ...
for the same reasons it left in the first place...
Environmental regulations...
Safety regulations...
Labor regulations...
Accounting regulations...
etc. etc. etc.

that’s the difference between you and me, you see the situation as impossible, daily I see things that were at one time impossible happening on a regular basis.

I see an AI company led by Engineers building a ship building business in Texas, building ships again in the US was supposed to be impossible, but it’s happening.

Will the Textile Industry come back to the US, who knows, it absolutely could come back but if it doesn’t other industries will make a comeback.
