The headlines focus on negotiations, but the war’s real story is this: Iran is steadily being broken by sanctions, isolation, and relentless military pressure.
One day, the United States seems ready to unleash a Curtis LeMay-style devastating bombing campaign of Iran. The next, it appears trapped in endless haggling with Iranian dissimulators.
Of the roughly 150 days since the first strike, about 90 have passed without major military operations.
Iran believes time is on its side. The Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, gas prices are too high, and antiwar House Democrats seem poised to win the midterms and bring Trump’s war to a halt.
Trump, by contrast, believes Iran can talk all it wants while sanctions, embargoes, and military pressure steadily weaken the regime.
The war has become so politicized in an election year that several basic realities have gone largely unnoticed by the media.
First, the cycle of bombing, pausing, negotiating, and bombing again may seem endless. But the confusion obscures the continuing effects of the embargoes, sanctions, blockade, and financial isolation imposed on Iran. Together, they are costing the theocracy more than $400 million a day in lost revenue, money that it can ill afford to lose. By haggling, Iran believes it can run out the clock until the midterms, but it may be only prolonging its own miserable situation.
Second, so far the bombing has not descended into a ground war. There are no embedded reporters and few Western journalists in Iran. So the world knows little about the true extent of the damage to the Iranian regime and its military-industrial-nuclear complex.
Nor do we know the mood of the once-restive Iranian street. But whether or not there are future allied military attacks, tensions will only increase as Iran runs out of money and basic goods.

Both sides appear to believe that time is on their side. Both can’t be right.
Why are we negotiating with Iran? Name one agreement or treaty they have honored since 1979. No matter what they sign, it means absolutely nothing to them because it’s signed by an Infidel. Regime change from within Iran is the only long term solution and it needs to be done without American troops on the ground.
Something tells me that even if the regime is overthrown there will still be too many crazies out there to stabilize the country. The Shah may have been too heavy handed in his rule but his tactics just may have been necessary. Would the Shah’s son be the Shah-lite? Light enough to bring the country together? I remember all the Iranian dissidents on our campuses in the late 70’s. Couldn’t be ignored. Carter was naive.
On one hand, Trump asserts he’s ready to unleash a catastrophic renewed bombing on Iran.
On the other, he seems cornered-—announcing successive “negotiations are on” blurbs to no avail.
As of today....about 150 days since the first 10,000 bombings....

I have to admit, I thought the Iranians would have successfully rebelled, even if just in certain locales, months ago. I was wrong. Disappointing.
I read the entire article. Mr. Hansen makes a lot of assumptions that I hope become reality but are not at all certain to do so.

No doubt Trump is disrupting and impoverishing Iran but he has failed to depose the mullah regime and its core supporters. It would seem that the Iranian regime strategy, of surviving and cauing economic and political disruptions within the United States is sound.( BTW it is essentially the same strategy Washington deployed through most of the American Revolutionary war) When the demonic Democrats ride the political backlash to power in ‘26 and ‘28 no doubt they will shower Iran with all sorts of “reparations” and aid. Its the American nation and the American people that will really suffer.
Tousi thinks that Trump’s ‘pumping up’ of an impending action is designed to smoke out the leakers who have cost American lives. The last ‘eminent’ leaked attack apparently yielded some names in the subsequent investigations, and if proven, heads will roll.

The uncertain thing is the view of most American voters.
They don’t think about any “long view”, they worry about energy costs ( gas, electricity ), interést rates, their mortgages, utilities and grocery bills.
Democrats exploit this with one word — AFFORDABILITY ( not that voting for them will solve the problem ).
I certainly hope that's true because the nut case Ayatollahs will never willing give up their hope of nuclear weapons. And if they get them, they will use them. That's why this war is so necessary.
Always a sober, grounded analysis by VDH.
