When i ditched the landline in 1998 for cell only IIRC it was cheaper than keeping the landline. That was likely due to no long distance charges on cell though.

I’m not implying there was manipulation, but they had to make us willing to give up privacy and buy in to little spy machines. Making landlines so expensive made us happy to make the change.
Our house now was built without landline phone jacks, and I really miss a landline.
