Benches clear in Guardians vs. Diamondbacks game after bunt attempt during perfect game bid

aseball's unwritten rules were broken Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field, at least according to a few members of the Cleveland Guardians.

In the top of the sixth inning, Arizona Diamondbacks utility man Tim Tawa attempted to bunt for a base hit with Guardians ace Gavin Williams working on a perfect game. The bunt attempt went foul and catcher Patrick Bailey took off his mask and had words with Tawa. Brayan Rocchio expressed some displeasure from shortstop as well.

Tawa lined a legit single to right field on the very next pitch to end the perfect game. A few minutes later, the game went into a rain delay, and as the grounds crew put the tarp on the field, Guardians third base coach Rouglas Odor had words for Tawa. Things escalated to the point that the benches cleared.

"I don't really have any reaction. It is what it is," Williams, who did not say anything to Tawa on the field, said after the game. "I don't really care. My job is to get outs, and that's what I'm trying to do."

I understand the unwritten rules, but come on, give me a break. The Guardians led 5-0 at the time, which is a comfortable but hardly insurmountable lead, and the D-backs are in a wild-card race. Tawa's playing to win the game. Arizona couldn't do anything against Williams all afternoon, so Tawa tried to do what he could to get on base. It's baseball. Bailey and the Guards need to chill out.

Another reason to start a baseball fight. Maybe a better reason than pitching inside

Since when do we care about the opposing pitcher’s feelings?

These are men, not women or children.

It’s baseball. The other team is not going to help get the perfect game.

I’ve been watching baseball since 1957. I think it s ridiculous for the Guardians to object to the bunt attempt so early in the game. Maybe the batter should not attempt a bunt in the 9th inning but not this early.

I have been watching baseball for 67 years and I have never heard of this unwritten rule. To my understanding, you try to get on base anyway you legally can - the object of the game is to score runs and win. The Guardians need to grow up. (by the way, I have been a Dodger fan for all of those 67 years and anyone upset by the Skubal trade needs to get a life, too).

“It’s baseball. The other team is not going to help get the perfect game.”

The top of the 6th is a long way from a perfect game - particularly in the “ moneyball era” when even the best pitchers are yanked long before the 9th.

I’ll be damned if I’d voluntarily lay dow so a guy’s perfect game or no hitter would be protected. He’s not gonna get a freebie.
Earn it boy!

They used to be pitchers but now they are all throwers because they are trying to get the strikeout.

This is the DUMBEST THING since the DH. If you’re batting, your job is to GET ON BASE, and that’s what Tawa was doing. If that pisses off the other team, then sign them up for therapy.

If it was the 8th or 9th, and a perfect in progress, no bunting. In the 6th it’s fair game.

I have been a Dodger fan for all of those 67 years

Do you remember 40 year old pinch-hitting lefty Vic Davilillo nailing a perfect bunt against the Phillies in in the NLCS? That was a splendid game. (Followed by a double from Manny Mota, and more!)

I have been a Dodgers fan since Duke Snider, Larry Sherry and Wally Moon led the Blue Crew to victory over the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. I have never heard of any unwritten rules like that. I would figure that a batter could bunt any time he wanted to.

Give the Guardians a juice box and a participation ribbon before the first pitch
