Today, it's a field of grass. But soon, it'll be the site of the first mosque in this Japanese town.
"It makes me worry about how our community might change," says long-time resident Noriko Izumizawa.
Plans to build an Islamic religious site in Fujisawa, a laid-back seaside town about an hour's drive south of Tokyo, have sparked a wide range of emotions.
There is anger and fear, as well as hope and acceptance, exposing the growing anxieties over immigration and social change as Japan grapples with a labour shortage from a shrinking and ageing population.
Although immigration remains politically sensitive and restrictive, Japan is increasingly relying on foreign workers to fill open jobs. That means an influx of immigrants with various cultures, languages, religions and ways of being.
So the debate that is playing out in towns like Fujisawa across the country is one that goes to the heart of how Japan sees itself.
Izumizawa is not alone in the way she feels. She is among a group of Fujisawa residents who are anxious about the increasingly visible Muslim community. She says that the polarising debates around immigration in the US and Europe have also contributed to her unease.

Wait they have Muslims in Japan? My uncle recently visited Japan, beautiful country, he said it was so clean, all you saw was American tourists and Japanese people, not one arab in sight so this must be in a different part of Japan

Certain ethnic groups, when in the minority, are very quiet and meek. All sweetness and light. As they grow in numbers, though, things will change. They become gremlins, then ogres, then demons, then your worst nightmare.
In the 90s, Japan, in a social experiment, had been importing workers from the middle east for labor on a 6-month basis for a while. Many just overstayed their visas. Pakistanis and Iranians were the worst. Crime went through the roof. Assault, rape, robberies. Iranians are not little people. The area around Ueno, in Tokyo became known as ‘Little Tehran’ and was extremely unsafe for women and Americans who flashed their passports for buying purposes, due to Reagan’s policies toward Iran.
One morning, at dawn, every policeman in the city, it seemed, shoulder to shoulder, closed in on Little Tehran and everyone foreigner was rounded up and processed. Those with no visas or expired ones were expelled. By the end of the day the crime problem in Tokyo was solved.
Looks as if Japan did not learn its lesson from the 90s.
