Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for an urgent meeting of EU interior ministers after what he called some member states’ “selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction” to this week’s mass border crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, in north Africa.
More than 50,000 people crossed into the territory from Morocco on Thursday and Friday, with at least 67 people dying in the attempt. Some drowned, while others were crushed as they tried to cross a breakwater barrier.
Although more than 48,000 people had voluntarily returned to Morocco by 6pm on Friday, the influx triggered a political crisis for the Madrid government and led some fellow EU countries to call for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen free-movement zone.
Sánchez said “virtually all” of those who had crossed the border had been returned, “preventing any unauthorised onward movement towards continental Europe”.
Juan Jesús Vivas, the president of Ceuta, said that while many people had returned to Morocco, not all those who had crossed into the city had left.
“We’re not back to normal because there are several thousand people who need to be returned, and there is still an atmosphere marked by unease and concern,” he said. He also called for “all the security measures deployed” in Ceuta to remain in place to guarantee the safety of the population.
Sánchez asked for the meeting after what appeared to be a breakdown of EU unity on external border policy, with Italy attacking Spain.
Italy announced on Friday evening that it would suspend its Schengen arrangements with Spain for a month, even though Ceuta – and Spain’s other north African enclave, Melilla – are subject to special Schengen rules that prevent onward movement within the zone.

One would think the idiot was hired to be selfish upon behalf of the Spanish people.
The people of Ceuta WISELY DID NOT PROVIDE FOOD, HYDRATION OR SHELTER TO THE INVADERS. The invaders did not bring food or water with them. Shops were closed so the invaders could buy nothing except for outrageously expensive items from black marketeers. The close by exits back to Morocco necessary became extremely attractive (as hunger and thirst and fatigue built) so the invaders WALKED OUT OF CEUTA.
It’s not difficult, folks. Provide the invaders NOTHING and they won’t come. Provide the invaders who are here and their exit will become a magnet to them.
Both hard-left papers, the NYT and the Red Guardian, have immediately leapt on the “most of them were returned” trope. Most doesn’t mean all and that’s a rather small community to try to absorb even a couple of thousand invaders. Somebody had to plan that event and that somebody will do it again.

Nothing to eat or drink. Nowhere to sleep. So the only option remaining was to go home.
I'm not so sure about that. I posted on another thread some "advice" from a website with information for migrants and refugees (w2eu.info). According to that site: "it is also possible to leave Ceuta and Melilla on your own. After a month and a day, Spanish law considers that your application has been accepted. From that moment on, if you so decide, you can continue your journey to the mainland. To do so, you will need to present a boat ticket to leave for the mainland."
"From Ceuta you will not be able to travel to the mainland if you do not communicate a change of address to the Spanish authorities, in Melilla this is not necessary."
And as I wrote, my take on this is that as long as the "asylum seekers" are allowed to travel from the Spanish territories in Africa to Spain they are inside the Schengen area and then anything goes....

Yep… but more harshly. They didn’t allow them a moment of comfort, nor a morsel of food. They got the “bum’s rush”. The rest of Europe should do the same.
