The Socialist Monster Awakens
American Greatness ^ | 28 Jul, 2026 | Victor Davis Hanson

The Left’s socialist revolt did not come from nowhere—it was the inevitable offspring of years of Democratic radicalization, now turning against the party that created it.

Who Caused Unaffordability?

Fear about “affordability” supposedly fueled the new, strident socialism.

Yet annual inflation during Biden’s four years averaged almost 5 percent. It peaked at over 9 percent, while prices for some key staples rose by 30 percent over his tenure—all to silence from the Left. (By contrast, annual inflation during Trump’s first term averaged 1.9 percent. In his second term, it averaged 2.6 percent in 2025—and may rise to 4.5 percent in 2026, given the war with Iran.)

The socialists were not just quiet during Biden’s four years; they were themselves responsible for the rampant Biden inflation. They had implemented an inflationary de facto third Obama term, ramming through the most radical and costly agenda in decades under the veneer of that cognitively challenged waxen effigy, good ol’ Joe Biden from Scranton.

So the current Jacobin takeover of the Democratic Party was not sparked by concerns about “affordability”—or at least not if by “affordability” we mean the middle-class struggle to buy a house, a car, or groceries.

Instead, the socialist moment was merely the logical culmination of years of boutique radicalism within the Democratic aristocracy—the ossified leadership of Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Hakeem Jeffries, along with the aging Black Caucus, the incoherent Squad, the DEI crowd, the open-border zealots, and the radical greens.

The grandees of the party also normalized the crazy mobs of BLM and Antifa long ago.

Democrats as Dr. Frankenstein

Almost every weaponized scam and national hysteria in the last two decades was amplified and spread by mainstream Democrats: the farcical claim that the Wuhan-lab-hatched COVID virus came from pangolins or bats; the Duke Lacrosse

The housing shortage was caused by price controls that took away the market incentive to build new housing.

Not only did we allow the government schools to indoctrinate our children, we let politicians create an environment for failure. Kids were herded into colleges, being told it was the surest path to success. What the kids got was more intense indoctrination and meaningless degrees. Eventually, those mush heads entered the working world, only to find that they couldn’t find a job, couldn’t afford to pay their massive loans, and couldn’t afford a home. Starting a family is virtually out of reach for many of these kids. Along comes some radicals, promising free stuff and a new system, socialism! The kids were not educated regarding socialism and it’s many failures, so they think, why not? What do we have to lose?

Disaster is coming.

Those younger folks have no basis in fact of the horrors of sociocommie regimes. I don’t recall very many folks trying to break in to East Berlin back in the day. But I do remember many tales of the risks folks took to get out. Guess what kids....NOT eveyone gets to be the ‘block captain’ or neighborhood chief. And, no, you won’t get it “right” this time. Thanks VDH. A real treasure for sure.

Please refer to the instructions in the manual: “Killing Zombies” ala “The Walking Dead.”

If you don’t cut off their heads, they will keep attacking.

McArthy was right, but his tactics were to brazen.

So while the marxists used mostly underground subterfuge, their media collaborators ran their defense and beat back attempts to expose them all.

When the cold war ended, then the tide could turn. Resistance to communist corrosion could take over media and educational systems unchecked.

These days, the only time anyone cares about private property is when it’s their own. You can take everyone else’s, with full justification and prejudice.

Commie organizers used their big tools: rent a mobs, news packets to play over-analyzed top members of the so called ‘press’ and lots of money aimed at destabilizing the country. Yep, everything from weirdos running for school boards (cheap cheap cheap elections to win) to the ‘squatter’ movement, to the whole transgender foofaraw, blocking worker class traffic, fake protesters and easily bought members of academia...

Commie filth and their useful idiots stand with enemies of the United States. If we’re not careful they’ll take over our country and we’ll never be free again.

There’s not enough criticism of the DSA economic program to make life more affordable. Medicare for all will be an expensive disaster. Wealth taxes will only make government bigger and more intrusive. Government control of industries will be a nightmare. Government redistribution of wealth will undermine our standard of living. America will become a feudal society with the commies at the top living large while the rest of us wallow in poverty at the bottom like California. Ayn Rand laid it all out in Atlas Shrugged.

Various causes celebres — minorities, environment, “affordability” — have always been (and remain) mere mascots to the lefties. 90 years’ worth.

The “issue” is never the issue. The issue is ALWAYS the revolution — Saul Alinsky.

“Affordability” is a term the Democrat Socialists keep throwing around, but they do not understand its actual meaning. It is a club which they can use with great precision, but real affordability is actually a set of ratios that society has agreed upon, based on the estimated annual income of the individual, and based on the productivity that individual in creating wealth, either by the sweat of the brow, or the machinations of intellect. Such and such a percentage of the total gross annual income is apportioned to food, housing, personal investments, lendable capital, and self-improvement, and so long as the individual is satisfied with the personal satisfactio achieved, all these things are “affordable”.

Socialists do not understand this concept. They think that all capital must be distributed according to the “greater good”, but they have no clue as to HOW the capital is generated in the first place, or that the individual has any rights whatsoever in determining how this capital shall be applied, and that those enterprises that are permitted can survive on subsidies from the largesse confiscated from the achievers who started the collection and investment of the capital. Activities or goods that are prohibited or restricted are managed by a crippling rate of taxation or rationing, which is supposed to be the source of the income the socialists plan to distribute to the greater part of the society, as a “reward”, or withheld to bring the recalcitrant into conformity.

Guaranteed to fail on some level or another, without the application of police power to compel the acceptance of the demands of the governing council of the socialist elite.

How cheap can a house get? Do they know?

If they buy a like house of a house now selling at $430,000 for $350,000 will they be happy when the going market price drops $20,000 a year?

$330,000
$310,000
$290,000
....

If the housing of building trade workers becomes 30% cheaper and more plentiful, the prices of building trade work might go down 30%.

If the housing of building trade workers becomes 40% cheaper and more plentiful, the prices of building trade work might go down 40%.

The way to treat people trying to overthrow the government of the United States is to investigate them, arrest them and try then in a Court of Law. Do you think we’re like the commies who killed hundreds of millions of their own people? Look up the numbers of starved and murdered fools who fell for the commie crap.

“Caused by 20 million aliens crashing in.”

There are a number of factors.

The key one is ignorance of the possible cost of construction by people having large incomes and stock winnings.

A second one is immigration, most especially family unification wherein a house can have four or more immigrant workers in it, compared to two legacy American nuclear family workers.

The third one is the California “affordable” housing law which allows four housing units on a single-family lot, which can add the effect of three housing unit incomes to the selling price and incentivizes Californians to flee to other states with their huge windfall before their former neighborhood becomes totally trashed.

What states might do is to limit the price buyers can pay for a house based on their highest annual earned incomes adjusted by the CPI. If the fleeing California family, had $750,000 in housing gains, $2 million in stock gains, and a lifetime high of $120,000 in household income, they might be limited to houses costing no more than three times their lifetime high earned income plus $60,000, i.e. $420,000 by a state.

Another thing that might be done is to cap Section 8 subsidies to national average housing costs. The units in a new California four-plex might be $2,000/month and the national average $1,400. Developers trashing neighborhoods with four-plexs would find that the federal government won’t pay really big money to upend single-family neighborhoods.
