A shopping centre has collapsed leaving a 'considerable number' of people dead, after a strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit southern Japan on Tuesday.
Japanese police previously said they had received reports of what sounded like an explosion at the Aeon Mall outlet in Kumamoto.
Emergency services said that 'many people' were trapped inside the centre, which was severely damaged as a result of the quake.
The tremor measured at the highest possible level seven on Japan's own Shindo scale of shaking.
The Japanese government issued emergency earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki prefectures, all on Japan's southern Kyushu island.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi earlier said that several injuries, collapsed buildings and fires had been reported.
'We are still assessing the extent of injuries and property damage, but I have been informed that there have already been several injuries,' Takaichi said.
'Power outages and fires are happening in some areas, and roads and bridges have been damaged and buildings collapsed,' she said.
One hospital had reported more than 50 injuries, public broadcaster NHK said. Several people on a high-speed train at the time of the quake were also injured, Nikkei newspaper said.
Large cracks appeared on major roads, including an elevated highway, and a goods train derailed, according to NHK, while rail services were halted and flights grounded.
TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, evacuated workers from its plant in the area as a precaution, a spokesperson for the firm said.
Sony and Fujifilm also evacuated staff from their plants in the area, Nikkei newspaper reported.
A Sony spokesperson earlier said it was checking the situation. More than 150,000 people have been instructed to go to evacuation centers, the disaster management agency said.

Kumamoto is on the southern island of Kyushu near Nagasaki.
God bless the hurting.
I’m worried about Sushiman.
NHK World woke me up at 3:30AM CDT, went wall to wall for three hours until the tsunami advisory was lifted. There’s going to be a lot more deaths recorded throughout the coastal areas of western Kyushu, and with the expressways and train tracks damaged, getting help to the area is going to be difficult.
Pray for the victims who are trapped in the rubble. 🙏
Japan can’t afford to lose more people.
God bless the suffering. I hope they are able to rescue them. We should send help.
I live 5 minutes from that Mall . WE live in the epicenter . Everything that wasn’t nailed down fell to the floor in every room of the house inc. computers , TV , stereo speakers , you name it . Some damage to inside and outside of house . This is the 3rd 7+ quake in 10 years . Time to move . Still in shock . We have electric and gas but no water at the moment . More later ...I’m still in shock . No dinner tonight as we have no appetite .
Hoping that U’S. can send some kind of help.
Thank God you and your family survived. Don’t be afraid to dm your FRiends here for any help we can give.
Sorry to read this. Hope and pray you and yours will be good and safe.
Please stay safe and help others, as possible.

glad to see you are doing ok!!!!
Still alive ; no injuries ; but not doing OK . ; )
Glad to hear you are okay.
Sigh. Earthquakes are a part of life over there, and it has always appeared to me that the Japanese have a very stoic acceptance of them, as much as they prepare as best they can.
Prayers up for those people.
Thanks for the updates
Wow
Prayers UP for you and all affected in Japan
Downgraded to a 6.8 at USGS. Doesn’t help the people affected!
Prayers for sushiman and his family.
