Ed Markey's new ad showcases support from the left – and an age problem

Sen. Ed Markey’s campaign released an ad this week meant to tout his progressive support.

Instead, the ad — which featured quick cuts of his top endorsers, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts), along with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts) — only highlighted the progressive left’s gerontocracy problem that has dogged the Markey campaign for months.

Markey is 80 and, after 53 years in elected office, is running for reelection to another six-year term, while Sanders, 84, and Warren, 77, are currently serving terms through 2030.

The Democratic gerontocracy issue is well documented. There was Joe Biden’s forced departure from the 2024 presidential race because of his age and frailty. And Dianne Feinstein holding on to her Senate seat until her death at 90. And Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying while serving instead of retiring under President Barack Obama.

Progressives sometimes use the issue to lambast the Democratic establishment, noting several leaders in the House and Senate who are not overtly progressive and well over 70. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), 75, is a frequent target of these attacks.

But Markey’s race — and ad — expose another tension: Some progressives calling for generational change are less willing to apply that standard when the aging incumbent is a longtime ideological ally.

….

Rodericka Applewhaite, a spokesperson for Majority Democrats and a former Biden White House aide, said….“Our party seniority-based system rewards longevity over renewal,” she said, calling it “bad for democracy” and a leading reason “voters are losing trust in the Democratic Party overall.”

According to this chart the 30-70s probably did a bit of damage too. More interesting would be a percentage of reelections per year. Now it’s probably 95%

There isn’t one single thing, one iota of legislation, pet project, or even big position, that I can attach to Markey.

Even dunderheads like Biden railroaded SCOTUS nominations. Most Skelletor senators like Yertle are well-known for SOMETHING.

I guess I shouldn’t complain….Markey is probably asleep at the switch, which means he’s not actively seeking the destruction in of life, liberty, and property.

He is simply a loyal Dem vote occupying a seat.

And he’s in MA, so it’s not like the Repubs can mount any meaningful challenge. Massachusetts has had every county in her state go for the Dem presidential candidate since 1988. That is a pretty clear sign of Tammany Hall-levels of fraud.

So here’s the big question: if he’s a smelly old white Dem guy in a safe Blue state, why isn’t he being replaced by a Mamdani-style socialist?

He will, the day that he dies.

Markey won election as a congressman promising he would limit himself to 2 terms. Not only did he break that promise/lie, he went on to serve several more terms and then ran for the senate. Here he is 30 years later at 80 still sucking it up at the public trough. A complete low life
