NYC-run grocery stores will sell meat, other basics at 30% off, Mamdani says

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) said Monday that fresh produce, meat, seafood and other staples will be sold at a 30 percent discount in the city-run grocery stores he wants to open in every borough.

Mamdani, who made city-run grocery stores and affordability key components of his campaign last year, said the stores would save the average shopper about $1,000 annually.

“For many, that 30 percent discount is the difference between an evening spent around the dinner table with family or working another double shift to make ends meet,” said Mamdani, adding that the discount roughly equates to the inflation rate on food items since the covid-19 pandemic.

Americans are increasingly feeling pinched by rising food costs.

Grocery prices have risen about 30 percent since the pandemic, including recent increases linked to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and the war in Iran. A recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that about two-thirds of Americans feel that groceries are unaffordable.

Because selling meat in state-run grocery stores worked so well in the Soviet Union.

Subsidize his stores with taxpayer funds to put real stores that pay taxes out of business

Oh sure, that’ll last. This is why you don’t let immature little kids be a mayor.

Assuming they can get a beef supplier, and are willing to use taxpayer funds to subsidize the retail price, they will never have any stock when you want it. People will wait in line for deliveries and it will sell out the same day. You can’t feed a city of 9 million living their lives with couple of grocery stores. Anything that has high demand which is sold at below market rates will result in shortages. Like the Russkies who had to wait in line for toilet paper back in the 1980s, or we Americans had to wait do for gasoline during the OPEC strike.

It’s going to be fun to see how Mamdani acquires the products for his grocery stores.

Is he going to confiscate them from commercial grocery stores?

I am not convinced there is a genuine intention to open these stores. Money has already been spread around and if no stores open they can always blame somebody else.

No, he’ll just buy them with taxes. This whole thing is just a grift. Connected people will make a fortune.

My wife worked with a woman from Russia who had been here for about 20 years. She was still amazed that you could walk into any grocery store and buy whatever you wanted.

“Now, here’s how it works. The city will subsidize a core set of staples. A private operator will run the store, but the answer to the standards that the city will set, these standards include requirements that at our stores bread will be cheaper, eggs will be cheaper, grocery shopping will no longer be an unsolvable equation, and workers will be treated with dignity,” Mamdani said.

So you will open stores guaranteed to lose money, the taxpayer subsidies and everyone is happy. The money lost will be unreal, not to mention the theft.

One plus side of the old Soviet System in Meat Markets:
The stores are spotlessly clean!
Nary a shriveled mouse carcass to be found in the entire display cabinet.
