Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday that Russia is preparing to bring an additional 30,000 North Korean troops into its war against Ukraine, a move that would dramatically expand Pyongyang's direct involvement in the conflict if confirmed.
"We also see Russia's cooperation with North Korea. Russia wants to bring in another 30,000 North Korean troops," Zelensky said in his nightly video address, according to Reuters. He added that preparations to receive the troops had been underway since June in Russia's Voronezh region.
The claim comes nearly two years after North Korea first sent troops to support Moscow under a growing military partnership between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Reuters reported that an estimated 14,000 North Korean personnel were deployed to Russia's Kursk region in 2024 to help repel a Ukrainian cross-border incursion.
Newsweek reached out to the Russian Foreign Ministry, along with the North Korean Embassy in Beijing and North Korea's U.N. mission in New York, for comment.

If we could just get them to surrender. Z needs South Koreans there to talk them into it. The Norks are volunteers? I’d say no. Better food and pay.
Remember how long Putin’s people here kept denying the North Koreans were there when Kim Jong Un first sent in his troops and those posters were claiming fake photos and everything fake, just like the Russian internet told them to think and/or to say, they kept that up for a long time.
We’ll know when or if they get there, but Zelinsky’s intelligence is probably accurate.
The troops are Korean People’s Army (KPA) troops sent by the army, including special forces, with 100s of officers and some generals, not individual volunteers.
