Rapid pace of interceptor and precision-guided weapons use worries Trump administration
CBS News ^ | July 23, 2026

The rapid pace at which the U.S. is expending some of its most advanced air-defense interceptors and precision-guided weapons in the Middle East is a point of great tension inside the Trump administration as President Trump's war with Iran ratchets up again, according to U.S. military and intelligence officials familiar with internal assessments. And it's raising broader concerns about America's readiness for a potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific.

The dwindling stockpiles of defensive interceptors and long-range missiles have become a pressure point for top military and civilian leaders who are weighing the demands of the war with Iran against maintaining readiness to deter other adversaries, including China.

The U.S. officials, who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the topic, said the U.S. cannot sustain the rate at which it expended precision munitions early in the campaign against Iran.

The defense industrial base is not equipped to produce missiles rapidly enough to replenish munitions that have been fired or transferred to U.S. Central Command, which is overseeing the conflict, leaving inventories under mounting pressure even as military operations continue.

“The U.S. officials, who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the topic, said the U.S. cannot sustain the rate at which it expended precision munitions early in the campaign against Iran.”

So it’s a fake story. Right there I stopped reading. Not because it might be true. But because See B.S. used this same technique to assure me that Russian Collusion was real and that Biden was at the top of his game and on and on and on.

Unnamed sources. Oh ok.

Palmer Luckey and Anduril may be our salvation on this, or part of it.

He’s not hidebound into the schema of the incumbent very small number of big military armaments suppliers, who are slow and expensive. Anduril is doing some interesting stuff that is probably keeping some of the incumbents’ execs up at night.

Except, of course, the US IS quickly burning through its inventory of precision munitions.

Pentagon is slow to adapt. Ukraine for years, has been using low-cost interceptor drones, such as the P1-SUN JetKiller, STING, and Zerka, to combat Russian surveillance and attack drones while we have used million dollar Patriot missiles to knock down cheap Iranian Shahed drones.

Ukrainian Defense Drones (UDD) — the American branch of Ukraine's F-Drones — is opening its first major U.S. manufacturing and assembly plant in Holland, Ohio. The $18.4 million project will create at least 300 jobs by late 2029 to build first-person-view drones for the Pentagon

Written by someone who clearly hadn’t worked in DoD procurement worlds and cycles.

Of course we’ve burned through on-hand inventories. Duh, we were at peace, so to speak.

these people should get real.

Well, I have another thought.

How do you spell “Arc-Light” in Farsi/Persian/ whatever ... ?

It’ll all blow up real good.

No doubt. My point being that if the cause agrees with the lefty agenda, then we have a limitless supply.

This has been a known issue since the Gulf War.

The lazy (and politically convenient assumption) was that the USAF would guarantee air supremacy and make quick work of any opponent before any lack of anti-aircraft and anti-missile defenses became apparent.

It's the same problem with Naval vessels: somehow, magically!, our broken procurement system and shriveled outsourced-to-China defense industrial base would be able to cope.

Meanwhile, hundreds of billions disappear inside a procurement system that benefits politically connected contractors while producing barely any usable weaponry.

Then we point and laugh at obvious Russian or Chinese procurement corruption, while ours is just more sophisticated.

“according to U.S. military and intelligence officials familiar with internal assessments.”

just more anti-MAGA, anti-Trump rumors from anonymous rumor mongers being reported as “news” [being posted by one of FR’s main paid foreign trolls]

Personally, I think the Coyote Block 3 Non-kinetic looks promising.

It’s portable, fast, reusable, and can take down multiple drones in a single sortie, using directed microwaves.
